UMD Preferred Wait List- Whats the Deal?

I just received a letter from University of Maryland that said that they were impressed with my qualifications..blah...blah but were unable to offer me a seat at this point.  It said that I was on the "Preferred Wait List" which is a very short wait list where most commonly all those students on the list get admitted. 

Whats the deal?  How confident can I be?

Call them and ask. Ask how many people are on the list, when they make decisions, etc. It's totally valid to bother them when they're using strange terminology.

I mean judging by what you provided, if this cycle proves to be "common" in the sense that it resembles the recent past cycles, then you are almost assured admittance. I'd be about 80 to 85% confident. I don't think calling helps, b/c they'll just tell you what you read.

For what it's worth, I think I'll be freeing up a spot there soon-ish.
