Everybody is always talking about Biglaw but what is considered Biglaw V10,25,50,100?

Generally speaking, biglaw firms are those that pay market salary in a given city.  That number varies, in NYC its 160k, in smaller cities its probably 145 give or take.  

The main thing is that after that top level of market paying firms there is a steep drop-off.  The law firm salary curve is bi-modal, that is firms either pay market or they pay much less - there is no in between (see link below)

I was actually trying to determine if the firm my uncle is a partner at is considered "biglaw", V65....

Yes.  All biglaw firms are not created equal in the minds of many attorneys however, and they vary greatly in "prestige" and selectivity.

i'm trying to think of an instance where people have used the term biglaw outside of the internet forum context.  can't think of any.  ;)

I've heard "elite law firms" thrown around irl.

"biglaw" = "elite law firms"?

even with that term, it depends who says it.  elite is relative.  ;)

You're probably right.  Biglaw does seem more definitive than elite.
