I'm not a big, fancy, big-city lawyer, but can she sue for slander if Imus didn't specifically target her or say something slanderous about her?

For example, if I say all southerners are retarded hicks, can I be sued by John Q. Retarded-Southerner for it?

No, there has to be some specificity, I think, but I'm not certain how much.  I'll look at my notes.

Excellent.  Until shown that my actions will have litigious consequences, I will continue on my merry slandering ways  :)

She's got a point - you can't impute whoredom*.  Technically, that's got defamation written all over it, provided it's false.

*This was, by far, my favorite part of torts.  Seriously.

You 'can't' meaning what exactly? It's not allowed?
Not that it matters, but where I'm from 'ho' turned generic, non-sexual insult a long time ago.

Just don't start picking out rural southern towns at random or you might run into a sufficiently small one to cross the specificity threshold.

No worries, I stick to broad generalizations.  That way I avoid lawsuits, and can piss off more people.

I think I just meant my bedroom. But I'll take a quick poll on my way out of town tomorrow and report back!

That was in reference to calling someone a "slut", which originally just meant "dirty."  So you can call someone a slut, provided that you only meant dirty, and weren't "imputing whoredom."

the key here is just to have enough merit to make it past summary judgment. If it does that, settlement cause the defendants aren't going to want a trial and have all that negative publicity. Will it get past SJ?  I have no clue. From what I know - probably not because 1) the statements may not rise to the specificity needed and 2) I don't see how there is any specific damage to the plantiff. Reputation? Everyone was disgusted at the comments, it was universally agreed that the statements were at the least an exaggeration of fact. Emtional damage? weak.
