Cambridge, the students, the social life. Anything.

Feel free to PM too. I'm bored.

It was either this or read.

Where do you live? How much do you study each night?

Did you pre-study at all before 1L?

What are dorms like (or other HLS housing) ?

What's the social scene and dating scene like?

How do you deal with the cold?

What are your thoughts on HLS' huge size?

One of the apartment buildings on a sides street just off Mass Ave.

If Toby still reads here I'm sure I'm risking retroactive rejection, but I only study around an hour or two a night.  Obviously much more some days and none other days.  I think I made up for it by going all out for exams.  I guess we'll find out.

My number is probably low because I ended up skipping a lot of my reading from the second half of  one of my classes last semester. I just didn't feel like I was getting anything out of it. We had a torts professor who didn't actually teach much torts, but instead taught a mix of various fields of law, psychology and his own personal philosophies about equality. He'd assign another 100 pages on, for example, statistics regarding defacto housing segregation, and I'd usually just skim it in 20 minutes. If you get his point after 2 pages, what's the point of going on for the next 98?

Other classes where I thought I was getting more out of the material (such as our criminal law course), I would read the assigned material, the optional material, and a lot of the cases not even on the syllabus.

So to answer your question, you can get by doing almost nothing, but you can also have enough work to keep you busy 12 hours a day. I do 1-2 hours a night and I think that's around average.  Maybe a little under the average.

1.) Assuming this was a joke, good one.  In all seriousness, you'll get everything you need in class, and the commercial stuff doesn't follow your professor close enough to help a whole lot even if you know it cover to cover (exception: civpro).

2.) It varies a lot.  I would be hard pressed to live in Grop, but I'm a person who likes my space.  An 8x10 room just wasn't going to do it for me. I was really worried about meeting people and having a social life as a 1L living off campus, but it was 100% not an issue.  You will know everyone from your section and many people from other sections.

3.) Honestly, it's great. I am surprised how well everyone gets along. It's a big place and you'll find a niche of people you'll really get along with.  Whether you want your social scene to be a church group, a group that studies hard then goes and enjoys a nice glass of wine together once a week, or a group that goes to a bar 4 nights a week, you can easily find it at HLS. Dating is a bit stickier. A lot of people are predictably hung up on dating in their section or in the law school, but you need to remember where HLS is.  Boston has something like 25 major colleges and universities and one of the largest 18 to 25-year-old student populations in the country.  You're going to meet a lot of interesting people, and if you venture out of Cambridge much, they won't all be from H or HLS.

4.) It wasn't that bad this year.  I'm from a similar climate so it didn't take much acclimation.  Sport a pair of jeans and a decent coat and you'll be fine on all but about 2 days a year.

5.) I love it, but I'm the type that doesn't get lost in a crowd easily. Some of my best friends are from the other sections and I can't imagine going to law school that was only the size of 2-3 of HLS's 7 sections.  If anything the school still feels too small to me, especially coming straight from undergrad.  Everyone still knows about half the school, and (like high schools of the same size) everyone still knows everyone's business.

Nah.

He said he read a few law school boards at the section reception at the beginning of the year.

I thought "sarcasm" to myself as soon as I posted, but it was too late.

I'm in 6, taking a tiny seminar, and I'm between journals right now.

You'd be fine. In fact, some of the people who got in late have the best apartments.
