Isn't someone supposed to be writing her (are you actually a her? I have no idea) comment?

Sex is irrelevant. Gender is a construct.

Don't remind me.

I've said it before (rather emphatically)--there may be some element of what people call YP going on. But in all of my interactions with the admissions office, I've been pretty well convinced that much of what people deem YP is attributed to Penn wanting a particular kind of class, and people being bitter about it.

Of course, troublemaker was totally YP'd and it was wrong.

i think that there's a sort of YP going on, but not what people generally refer to as YP.  i think people think of YP as "your numbers are too high", and i don't think that's it.  i think it's YP in terms of "if you don't want us, we don't want you."  like if you make it obvious that you don't really care about them and are putting them down as a safety while shooting for yale, then they're not going to accept you.  and that's kind of a YP, but not what people generally think of as a YP.  i mean no one likes getting rejected.  it's the same with law firm recruiting.  if you make it clear that you don't care about them, that's a turnoff and they're less likely to accept you.

also,

::buys cady small dog, punts cady's small dog::

yeah, that's pretty much what i meant.

How else do you think Penn keeps its ~12% acceptance rate?

Yes, Penn games the rankings.
Yes, the way they game the rankings and run their admissions is lame.

My only issue with Penn bashing is the fact that other law schools are not prevented from doing exactly what Penn does.

there's nothing preventing everyone from cheating on their spouses, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't judge those who do.

wow, that was a little harsh.

Totally correct and the natural response to what I said.

I have a negative impression of them because of it, but I don't feel that what they are doing is unfair in terms of gaming the rankings.

Mild bumps in acceptance rate or LSAT average really don't make much of a difference in USNEWS rankings.  I'm almost positive most of the mystery surrounding Penn admissions has to do with the WhyPenn essay.  The essays I've read from people who were waitlisted but within legit # ranges were generally lackluster and indicated a lack of desire to go to Penn.

From everyone I have spoken to, including some current Penn students, the WhyPenn is PIVOTAL in the admission of candidates with borderline low or borderline too high (people who would go to HYS) numbers.  They want people who WANT to be there.  And they don't mind rejecting those who don't, no matter WHAT their scores are.

omg! Penn games the rankings! Penn inflates all of their numbers! Penn is way overrated! omg!

touchy, touchy.  I didn't say anything at all about Penn being overrated.

No? That would be the implication, if Penn artificially lowers their acceptance rate to game the rankings.

Also, I'll show you touchy!

I maintain that people on this board dislike Penn for doing nothing different than most schools do (and yes, I've read "that article").

I dislike Penn because they don't adequately compensate Joe Paterno.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is a joke.

You're right.  In reality, I don't like Penn because it yield protects, and because I don't even know what a "nittany lion" is.  Plus, Penn is ranked #91.  That's basically TTT.

Way to confuse Penn State (Dickinson) with the University of Pennsylvania.  Wow.
