Harvard vs. the Hamilton (Columbia)

Harvard vs. the Hamilton (Columbia)
« on: January 27, 2008, 08:50:19 AM »
I will definitely visit both schools and examine my fin aid package at Harvard first, but any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not remotely interested in academia. I'm planning on entering Big Law initially and then hopefully transfering to a more lifestyle friendly firm if/when I have a family. Going to a tremendous law school debt-free and keeping all my money sounds great to me.  :D

On the other hand, Harvard is Harvard. As a first-gen college student, its a total dream come true to go to Harvard. I'm also a little afraid that as a median student at Columbia, my job options wouldn't be as great than if I were a middle of the road student at Harvard. Is the money worth the prestige drop? Or will a Harvard J.D. just be worth its price tag?

BTW, I realize I'm absolutely blessed to be in this situation, and its pretty much a win-win situation. But I still can't sleep.  :-\

Money is money. I'd personally pick CLS.

Harvard is a definite boost for academia and clerkships, but if all you want is Biglaw, there is virtually no difference between Columbia and Harvard.  ::waits for HLS trolls to dispute this::

Is there any chance of leveraging the Hamilton to get some $$ at HLS?  Or does HLS consider themselves above such maneuvering?

And by the way, CalGirl, your numbers are insane!  I think you'll need to start considering weighing Columbia w/ the Hamilton v. YLS.

What's to dispute? It's totally true, afaik.

Probably some chance, but not too much. HLS has to deal with this decision from quite a few 0Ls a number of times every year (consider how many Hamiltons are cross-admits at HLS--like, all, right?), and they can't go giving every Hamilton a matching amount of money. They're pretty hard-ass about need-based only, iirc.

I didn't think I could bargain with them. Could I contact Harvard admins and discuss the issue with them? Or would that go over badly? BTW, I think I would qualify for a significant amount of need aid - I have pell grants.

Also, Dash and Columbia Troll 2.0, what do you think the big law cutoffs are for your schools?

I'd take the Hamilton unless I wanted to teach law.  There's a 55-page thread about this from 2 years ago; I don't know how helpful it would be since the OP wants to be a professor.  Do they still do the faculty mentor thing?  Probably doesn't matter all that much for your decision, I just think it's really cool.
