Black Law Students / Dumb things that we said as 0L's
« on: May 11, 2009, 06:52:23 PM »
1. I'm NEVER going to surf the internet during class.

2. I'm going to brief EVERY case for class.

3. I had to read a lot in my undergrad major, so I'm sure I can handle a little more in Law School.

4. I'm sure I'll go to every class in LAW SCHOOL.

5. I'm going to hand-write all my notes because I did it undergrad and I can REMEMBER things better.

Black Law Students / Graduating 3L taking questions
« on: April 24, 2009, 09:14:09 PM »

After 3 long, hard, frustrating years I have been granted parole from my law school. I got a couple weeks till graduation/bar prep. So I want to pass on some knowledge that I've gained thru-out my time here.

So ask away!

After a long and arduous battle, I have FINALLY made it to the end of hell in my quest for a Beatific Vision known as a J.D.

So my job is lined up for the fall and BarBri is registered and paid for. But I have no clue what to do after I finish the Bar Exam.

For all you ASSOCIATES/VETERANS out there, what tips do u have for those of us gettin' ready to make that journey into the profession?

Black Law Students / End of Summer Vacation ideas?
« on: July 07, 2008, 08:28:26 AM »
My internship is over around Aug. 1st and I don't start school until Aug. 19th.

So I'm trying to figure out what I should do during that two week gap.

Give me some ideas on vacation places I can go.

I was considering hitting up D.C. to hang out w/ some friends.

NYC sounds nice, but I don't know anybody up there and I've never been, would that hamper my ability to have a good time tho?

I've been to Chi-town once, but that was w/ a group of friends. This time I'll be dolo.

Converse and Opinionate, please!

Black Law Students / Life as a Summer Associate
« on: May 18, 2008, 08:09:26 PM »
Shout out to 2Lacoste & Burning Sands,

So for those of us working this summer. What has your experience been like so far? If you could say anything to your new coworkers/employers what would it be?

"Dear Paralegals and various Administrative Assistants,

While I recognize that there is only one other Black man in this entire office, and therefore you are not used to seeing us   in such proximity, would it be too much to ask that you don't JUMP BACK so visibly startled whenever you walk around the corner and see me?

"Dear Black man arrested for breaking into Three different Offices after-dark,

You f-in' it up for the rest of us, right? You do know they E-MAIL a picture of your mugshot around the entire building, right? You do know that with a shaved head they can't tell about 85% of us apart. Next time you choose to break the law and scare white people, can you NOT do it in my building?

Black Law Students / Turning over the reigns of BLSA
« on: March 20, 2008, 07:11:02 AM »
AAAAhhhhh, such a relaxing feeling. My chapter just held nominations for elections for the 2008-2009 school year. We're having elections next week. It is nice to know that the burden shall be placed on someone else's shoulders, and I can enjoy my 3L year in peace and relative quiet.

Do ya'll plan on being involved in BLSA next year?

Black Law Students / Tips for 1L Receptions
« on: December 15, 2007, 08:35:51 PM »
So it is the Holiday Season and Law Firms are rolling out the Red Carpet in an attempt to woo the High Scoring and Well-connected 1L's to come work for them this summer.

What is some advise that you Old (some older than others) heads have for the current 1Ls who are preparing for their first reception.

Most of the flyers say "Business Casual" and they really do mean that, however I always felt that it was better to at least have a Tie on. Regardless of whether you interview w/ this firm or not this is your "First Impression" for you and them. Dress for success.

Beginning Conversation:
Maybe it is just my area, but most of the things I noticed was that I would typically be one of the few if ANY Black Men at the reception, so naturally I would stand out amongst the crowd and it would be easier for the Attorneys there to start talking to me.
Try to think of 3 questions that you have so that you'll know what to ask the attorneys once you start talking. Nothing sucks more than asking the same question that the Attorney has already answered for the other 4 1Ls he's spoken to. If you know you are interested in Transaction, look up a few of the clients that the firm represents and have questions ready to ask.

Eat the food, that's what they got it for. Just don't try to walk away w/ any "to-go" boxes.

Those are just my thoughts, what everybody else think?

Black Law Students / New Edition = Our Generation's Temptations?
« on: December 12, 2007, 03:20:44 PM »
When you think about it, what group do you know from our generation has had the same type of longevity as New Edition? Or has even broken up and re-formed as much as New Edition?

Bobbi Brown = David Ruffins

All the Splinter Groups = Bel Biv DaVoe

Maybe we'll have to wait another 20 years to see if NE is still performing before we can make an accurate assessment.

So Black Elders (kinda) What advice do you have for us 2Ls who are preparing to take the first (for some of us) steps into the working world of Law Firms?

Aside from the obvious: Don't get drunk in front of your co-workers.

What is advice that you can give for Black summer associates to follow?
