Title: Processing Time Since Oct LSAT?
Post by: The Dread Pirate Roberts on October 09, 2005, 08:31:48 AM
I was wondering if anybody has had quick turnaround on LoRs sent since the October LSAT.  It occured to me that that might be what's slowing down the process for my recs, since two recommenders sent out letters on the Monday after the test, and neither has been reported received, and it's hard to believe that both were lost in the mail.

Seems like a good theory to me.  I have one sent the Thurs before the test get processed Oct 5.  The other two were sent the Monday after the test and are still MIA.  So let's hope it's the LSAT slowing it down.  Would you let me know when yours get processed and I can do the same?  That way we can maybe have an idea of when to ask the person to resend it as if it's lost in the mail.

Last year, the letters didn't show up as having arrived until after the 10-14 day processing time.  On December 23rd, a letter appeared on my LSDAS account saying it was recieved on 12/11/04.  Odds are, your letters are there, but won't show up for a few more weeks.

Drat.  I really wanted to make the EA deadline at NYU.

Oh, well.  I suppose an extra month of waiting won't kill me.  Probably.

My letter was sent on Oct 5th, I got an email from LSAC today that it was received.

Today is Oct 10th.  ;D

They must have done a batch, because one of mine just got in.  Yay!  2 down, 1 to go.

I'm jealous, still waiting.  If only my thesis was not so tedious the time might pass faster.

I'm still waiting for my RTK letter, which I think was sent on Oct. 3 ( the MOnday after).

I had one letter sent the Sept. 28 and it was processed 7 days later. Hopefully then my last RTK letter will be rec'd/processed today or tomorrow.

Both my RTK letter and my second general letter were mailed on the 3rd.  So of course the one that I don't need to make the Oct 15th EA deadline is the one that they processed.

Solidarity forever, for LSD makes us strong.

One of my two letters sent Oct 3 made it today... just need the other one to make it soon as I think it's probably the best so I want to make sure it's in the file before reviewing happens.

My prof sent two letters on Oct 6-7 and they were processed today.  Now I only have the slight worry that he mixed up the targeted letter to a specific school and the general letter.

If my letters are sent out on Oct. 24th, when would be a reasonable guess as to when my file would be "finished" and completely ready for schools? Mid-Nov. at the latest right?

7 days in the mail is highly improbable. The rule is 2-3-4. Takes 2 days for a letter to reach its destination in the same city/region. 3 days nationally. 4 days internationally. And those are the USPS guidelines. They often manage it in 1-2-3. 7 days to get to Pennsylvania is highly unlikely.

Okay maybe I'm just dreaming, but I thought LSDAS sent the law school report and all the letters electronically to all the schools??

btw to add to the freakout on this thread, how bad is it if a recommender forgets to date a letter?

I know I saw someone posting that they'd had theirs faxed and it took longer than that.

And if my last LOR isn't processed in the next four hours, I'm officially not applying EA to NYU.  Oh, well.

I don't see why not, as long as your recommender agrees. I don't know why more people don't do it this way, except maybe LSAC's fax machines would be busy all the time. And yeah I hear that other people who faxed it in still took a few weeks, so I think it varies a lot.

Make sure to send that recommender a big lump of coal.

It isn't her fault.  She sent it in two weeks ago (or so she says, and I believe her).  Based on the processing time for my first LoR I figured I'd be all set.  Little did I know that sometimes, at random, it takes much longer.

Plus, I asked her late because I didn't realize until mid September that I needed a scholarship-specific rec.
Title: Re: Processing Time Since Oct LSAT?
Post by: thenextstep on October 14, 2005, 08:16:32 AM
Yeah it is just pretty random I think in terms of processing time.  The first letter was processed really fast.  The second and third were sent on the same day and one was processed 2 days ago, the other hasn't been.  Frustrating as I had to have Georgetown hold my app until the third one was in (it's probably the strongest) because they consider you complete with just 1 rec and go ahead and send it to committee.  Hope it gets in soon!!

I think faxing would be pretty much as variable.  The best option I think would be mail with some sort of tracking (like delivery confirmation or something).  But that's not very cheap, faxing is.

Same deal here.  Except replace "2" with "5."  If only it had been reversed...

Oh if it's not processed today, then I'll get up to 5 days easily since I doubt they are working on the weekend... sorry you missed the NYU EA deadline.  But I'm sure it won't be a big difference in your chances of getting in, just hear a decision later.

Since y'all are talking LOR's, quick question -- One of my recommenders failed to write me a letter.  I met with him and asked him to write it back in August, and I think he just forgot.  I went ahead and asked someone else to write it, but should I ever mention it or ask him about it?  I see him pretty frequently, he's a boss in my company, so I don't know what to do.  Any pearls of wisdom?
Title: Re: Processing Time Since Oct LSAT?
Post by: thenextstep on October 14, 2005, 08:45:58 AM
I think you need to follow up with him.  If he forgot, maybe it's because you didn't remind him (not to accuse you but...).  Either way, even if it's all on him, he agreed to write it so you should still have him write it.  Just ask him to give you the letter (signed across the back) and use it for waitlists OR he can send it to LSAC as a third/fourth letter.

The talk was less about processing times being bad and more about them seeming random.  I want to say seeming because for all we know there is a very regulated system over there in Newtown.

And, re: what you said, your evidence seems to support the "seemingly random" theory.

I'm sure there is; it's just based on variables we'd never consider, like the size of the envelope, and how much they want to see our heads explode on any given day.

Still waiting....  My last one was also sent Monday the 3rd and is not processed yet.  Frustrating.

What do you mean that they only accept updated letters on the 1st and the 15th?

Many schools have a contract with LSDAS to get updated reports at certain times of the month, not just immediately upon getting updated.  I think for most schools it's the 1st and 15th but some only get them monthly, some get them weekly, and a few get them whenever the report is updated.  It shouldn't make a huge difference I'd think.

I'm so happy I would be jumping for joy if I wasn't at work.  I just checked LSAC, planning on being disappointed yet again, and my transcript was just received and processed.  It was sent out on 10/12 or 10/13 by Express Mail.

Does anyone have any idea how long it will take for my report to be ready to send out to the schools?  (I'm NOT waiting for anything else to be sent to LSAC).

Would any school look down on only getting 2 academic letters instead of that *optional* third?  I have a third being written but after the talk I just had with the guys, I don't think it's going to be great and I don't want his to hurt the other two that will be really good.

I think unless three are "recommended" two are fine.  Certainly two excellent ones are better than two excellent ones and one bad or even mediocre one.

I'm not sure.  LSAC has a list of how many are required/recommended, but it's not 100% accurate.  Most schools note it on their applications.

For what it's worth, I don't think any of my schools actually recommended more than 2 (LSAC claims BU wants 4, but I found no indication of that on their application, so I sent only 2, plus the dean's certification, which they list as a recommendation).

The final, second letter of recommendation has been received and processed!

Sweet, that means when my score comes in, my first reports will all go out and they will all be complete which means, assuming my school gets its act together (and I do not see why they wouldn't) and sends the Dean's Certs, I will be complete everywhere by early Nov. and definitely in time for my two EA schools.

My recommender forgot to attach the LSAC form, so it cannot be processed.  But no, they didn't tell me, they didn't tell him... why not?  Because return to sender it a great song and they just wanted to live it out.  Meanwhile he could have just faxed the form in if they told us and kept the letter.  Nope, that would be efficient and nice.  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

So hopefully he'll fax it in today.  Sadly his job keeps him mostly out of the office, but I left a message and an email with instructions so hopefully it'll work out.

I hate this.  My recommender can't find the LSAC form (which makes me question LSAC more than him honestly...).  So now I have to settle for looking like I didn't waive my right to see the rec because I can't get a scanned signed version to be legible AND faxing it made it even worse.  Since he is faxing it in, it would be pretty much unrecgonizable by the time it reached LSAC.  So I emailed him the PDF of the form, which of course isn't signed.  ARGH!!!  Oh well, I'll just pretend I forgot to sign it and email the schools that.  I'd rather look absent-minded than have to deal with this any longer.

Wow, I'm surprised he even admitted that much... I'd expected them to say "E-mails go out on Monday, just like your account says"

I had to work him a little bit.  But he finally broke  ;D
