Temple scared the bejeezus out of me, though.  They'd have to pony up some big bucks to make me want to go there.  I figure with all the money and jewelry I'll lose through frequent muggings, they'll at least have to help me break even.   ;)

No offense, but is it really necessary to trash the Temple campus in so many of your posts?

We get it- You think Temple is a warzone, unsafe, etc.

I visited and personally thought the area was safe enough and I was incredibly impressed with the Law School overall.

I know you don't mean anything bad by your comments, but as someone who will most likely attend Temple next year, it is slightly annoying to have the area be trashed non-stop, especially when in my opinion you are exaggerating about how bad it is.  I certainly won't be wandering the streets at night far away from campus, but the campus itself seems very safe, and since I will be living in Center City that's enough for me.

Again, I mean no offense, but you seem to bring it up a lot and I think you are giving Temple a worse rep than it deserves.

Just my two cents.

How could I give Temple any kind of reputation, good or bad?  I'm posting my opinion, my two cents, so to speak.  I'm entitled to my opinion, as are you.  If you don't agree with what I have to say, counter it with some positives about Temple, instead of just criticizing my right to say whatever I want about a school I visited and got a very bad impression of.  In fact, I'd like to hear some positive things about Temple.  Maybe it would help change my mind.

Twarga-

They do have a point.  Every time you see a Temple thread you act as though its your mission to bash the school.  I went to Temple undergrad and get offended at your posts too.  If it were once or twice, no big deal, but it seems to be every chance you get.

What's up with that Btw?  Why do you feel it so necessary to trash a school that many of us have or want to go to?

Alright, alright.  I'm sorry.   I had no idea there were people out there who took what I said so personally and got so offended.  So in order to keep things light and breezy here on LSD, I will make no further comments regarding Temple.  None.  I won't even post if I get in.  It'll remain one of life's little mysteries.   ;)

Having Hunter S. Thompson and George W. Bush in the same profile is rather baffling.

P.S.

Yeah, I think Temple is great.  That said, I hope Twarga doesn't talk too loud or Chaney might send one of his thugs after her!  :P

Personally, its not so much you have that opinion of Temple.  You are certainly entitled to it and, should someone post a message asking for opinions on the school, I would hope that you would chime in.  Its the posts in topics such as these that are completely unnecessary and add nothing to the specific topic that are tiresome.  And as was mentioned before, if it was only once or twice, it wouldn't bother me, but everytime I see Temple as the subject I know you are going to have a post ripping the school.

Yeah, I keep my art and politics seperate.  They often collide with one another.

Anyway, Chaney is gonna send one of his "Goons" over to Twarga's to throw some hard fouls for dissin' Temple.  Then Cosby is gonna..........ah nevermind    ;)

Let it go.  I apologized.  Isn't that enough?  Or is it that you want to start a big ol' knock down drag out in this thread?  I'M SORRY FOR TRASHING TEMPLE!  I'M SORRY I DIDN'T FEEL SAFE THERE!  I'M SORRY IF I THOUGHT TELLING OTHERS ABOUT MY FEELINGS WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO!  I'M SORRY!  I'M SORRY!  I'M SORRY!

I think it's pretty funny that no fewer than 3 people have come to the defense of a group of buildings located in an unfortunate area, but very few people come to the defense of the victims of trolls and flamers on the board who rip apart the race, appearance, LSAT scores, etc. of fellow users.

Now let's get back to bashing Cooley and People's School of Law, because that's the socially acceptable thing to do.

I'm taking a break from LSD for awhile.  I really don't like being the center of all this negative attention because I made a snarky comment about getting mugged in a bad section of Philly.  Even after I apologized it didn't stop.  I'm too old for this cr*p.

twarga-

Since I started this firestorm I thought I would say my peace and it will hopefully will get dropped.

I tried to add in enough qualifiers to let you know that I wasn't mad, or wasn't trying to fight, and I sincerely apologize if  you took it to be me calling you out.

And as others have said, I have no problem with you letting it be known that you thought Temple felt very unsafe to you- this board would be nothing without those sort of opinions.  My point was it seemed you went out of your way to talk bad about Temple's location, even when that specifically was not a topic. Not trying to beat you over the head, just trying to clarify that your opinion is very very welcome, and I actually kept it in mind when I visited.

I myself am under no illusions that Temple is in a great area, but in  response to your question, there are enough positives that overwhelm that negative.

I thought the campus itself was nice and busy, with plenty of places to eat and study.

Though I thought the outside of the law building was hideous I was very impressed with the newly renovated inside of it.

I liked the atmosphere overall and my conversation with the administration went very well.

Doing some research I am very pleased with Temple's placement rate in Philly and with its regional rep.

Overall, while the campus area is a slight negative to me, its made up by other factors, and I am pretty excited about going there in the fall.

Hope this adds something to the discussion, and once again sorry if I offended you.

Also congrats to the ones getting scholarships from Temple- I got a little one (10,000 non-renewable) so I am jealous.  :P

\

Congratulations on your scholarship- That is what, a third of your tutition paid for all three years since you are in-state?  Nice deal.

I might respectfully see if there is a possibility of getting a bit more money...10,000 for 1st year is nice, but over three years that isn't all that much for out of state tuition.

Still, I am convinced it is the school for me and I am just thankful I got something- no greed here.

Regarding my focus, I am definitely interested in the Trial Ad program..as I am sure many will be.  The head professor of the program sent a nice email today talking about the programs strengths; I had mentioned my interest to the admissions lady I talked to on my visit, so I thought that was nice of the  prof to do, even though I am sure it is a mass email he sends to many.

So yeah, I am interested in Trial Ad but I do know that being a trial lawyer isn't incredibly likely, so I am coming into school with an open mind.

Now I am starting to look into housing options; any recommendations for cheap, safe places in Center City?

Doesn't hurt to ask.  You could always says something like, 'I really appreciate your first year offer and was wondering if there were opportunities for scholarship money during my second and third year...'

I also got a letter from David Post who is the head professor in the Technology Law program.  I guess TU is making the profs earn their keep during Spring Break!

I apologize for ignoring this part of the message.  I am not sure what your definition of cheap is, but if you want to stay in center city, there are a lot of options.  Cheaper areas are Northern Liberties and the Art Museum area.  Trendier areas are South Street and Old City.  I have some links at home which I will send to you in a PM.

I sent my deposit into temple about a week ago. Went to an admitted student day on Monday (during the snowstorm). I was really really impressed...I'm convinced I'm making a good decision. I'm still waiting on two higher-ranked schools, but they'd have to put up some really good numbers to beat a scholarship on in-state tution and the absence of a need to find my own housing (ah, living at home at 22...LOL)

I would recommend that anyone who's on the fence still go to an admitted student day that isn't the open house. I was in a group with about 4 other students -- we all got very personalized attention and were able to talk one-on-one with students, professors, finaid, and administators.

Of course my loyalties lie to Saint Joe's, so it was kinda interesting being on Temple's campus after the whole Cheyney, John Bryant fiasco. (Big John, if you're reading, get better!) LOL.

Oh and also, to the poster who mentioned being scared on Broad Street, it's really not that bad. I've lived in Philly all my life and as long as you're careful and smart about what you're doing you should be fine. Parents at the tour were worried about that as well, and we were told that the parking is secure and there are guards around 24/7. It's only really late at night that you might even think of worrying (because otherwise there's students everywhere) and even then, if you're a day student you probably won't be around.

You can't beat the Pennsylvania tuition rate at Temple. Yes, the campus looks like 1945 Berlin, but the law facilities are very impressive. Personally, when I attended the "admitted student day" I was amazed by the personal attention. Of all 300 billion law schools, Temple is one of 5 law schools to have their applications up over 20% this year. Temple is cheap, located in a major metropolitan area and gives you streed cred with 50 cent if you make it through graduation. That's tough to beat!    ;D

Temple is in the WORST section of Philly.  If anyone doesn't think it's a SERIOUS consideration, they're crazy.  If you've visited and think it wasn't sketchy, you're not perceptive.  I've lived in and around Philly my entire life, so I probably have a better idea of the safe/unsafe neighborhoods better than people who just visited once.  The good thing about the campus is that it's lit up w/ floodlights on all the buildings at night, but you wouldn't want to be there on foot--at leaast not even a foot off of campus.

Having said all that, if I get into Temple, I'll most likely go there despite the area it's in.  I'd just never venture even an inch off campus up there.

I don't think anyone argues about the area it is in.  However, the campus is as safe as any other urban campus.  And there really is no reason to venture off into the surrounding neighborhood.  There is parking on site and there is a subway and train stop as well.  This has all been beaten to death but I thought it should be addressed.

Rebecca Dougherty, one of the admissions officers, told me about the 20% jump in applications. Yes, the admitted student day was excellent. If you haven't attended one, I would highly recommend it. Does anyone see any reason to attend Villanova or Rutgers-Camden instead of Temple? Also, is going to Penn worth the additional $21,000 in tuition? Thanks!

If you are a NJ resident, Rutgers tuition is similar to what Temple's tuition is for PA residents.  Other than that, its seems Temple is a better option in general.  Its at least 10 spots higher in the rankings and seems to be getting stronger over the past couple of years.  Not sure I can say the same for Villanona or Rutgers.  I don't know the specifics about individual programs so if you are looking for a particular specialty, it could be that temple isn't as good but I am not sure.

With regards to Penn being worth the extra 21k, it depends on your goals.  If you want to stay in Philly with a decent shot at Biglaw, Temple is probably just as good as Penn.  However, if you want to work in NYC, DC or another major market outside of Philly, or you want an almost certain shot at Biglaw, Penn is probably the way to go.  For what its worth, I applied to both Penn and Temple (as well as Rutgers and 'nova) and I am almost definitely going to Temple, even if Penn miraculously lets me in.  Temple's tuition, along with the bit of money they gave me, is far too good a deal to pass up.

I have a book recommendation for all of you thinking about going to Temple, especially for those who want to work in BIGLAW.  Check out "Barman" by Wellen.  It's an easy read about a top Temple law student and how he got into Biglaw, took the bar, handled temple, etc.  I enjoyed it.

Thanks Dubs! Does anyone know of any good sites to search for housing besides Craig's list?

In the projected aid package they sent to you (if asked), did any of you get need-based grants?

thank you

No for me, and my expected financial contribution was zero.

I emailed the financial aid office and they said the funds are limited and they try to give the grants to people who haven't gotten any scholarships (I received a non-renewable 10,000 First Year Scholar grant).

She also said the grants are typically no more than 1,800 dollars and are only for the first year.

I received a scholarship from Temple today. 100% of tuition paid for the first year and 50% paid for the 2nd and 3rd years, respectively.

Hehe, well us Californians don't really consider the Bay Area as warm... call us unappreciative I suppose!

But yeah I would, depending on the school and other circumstances (read: $$$); I'd love to go school on the east coast...

Yes, the Bay Area is the "cold" part of California. Trust me, I was raised in socal and went to school in San Francisco. When you move to the east it is a huge change. Snow, the white fluffly stuff, is awful! If you are getting california tuition rates I would stay there. If you are truly interested in going back east, ask temple for more cash!

BTW... housing in philadelphia is about 1/3 of the price of the Bay Area. For the same price I paid for a small room in San Francisco I have a 2 bedroom apartment!

Right now I am living in Lower Germantown near the R8 queens lane stop. Before that I was in West philly. At the moment, I am waiting for my rejection from boalt and no cash from schools in California and then I am going to look into buying a house near the R3 or the broad street line.  Are you near the italian market dubs?

actually live in the suburbs down near the delaware border (on the r3 line but about a 45-50 minute train ride).  wife just got a job in philly though and since we are going to be paying the wage tax anyway, figure moving downtown makes sense for both of us.

good luck with the search!
