Black Law Student Discussion Board / Re: FAMU Law School
« on: April 18, 2010, 05:34:13 PM »
I am 57 and will start in the part time program Fall 2010. I was admitted to full time, but decided not to quit my job. I am looking forward to the fun. I love that FAMU is a very diverse school. I am an old white guy married to an old black women! She thinks this is one of the best decisions I have made. I hope so!

lol.  ;D

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Stetson $$$$ vs UF $

Everything's cool, I've just been out and about leading the hustla lifestyle as of late. I'm still a 2L for another month. I have a little something lined up for summer, but nothing spectacular at the moment, probably just doing part time work and part time school.

And how are things in your neck of the woods?

I'm glad that all goes well for you.

Things are going very well for me actually.  I'm  lucky to have a very solid opportunity for this summer, especially with the state of the economy.  It's brutal out there, even for students with top-notch grades and LR.

Self-centered much?  He was not even asking about you.

UF.

Hey, where have you been?  How are things going?  Are you now a 2L or 3L?   If 2L, anything for this summer?

A second plus for any Texas resident is, of course, the almost-bargain tuition.

That's what I meant.  Would it be wise to have extra $100K in debt for a Georgetown degree over a UT degree?

Where should I go next fall? / Re: BC v BU$$ v VULS
« on: April 04, 2010, 09:15:23 PM »
Hello all,

Looking for some input on a few choices.  I have been accepted to BC, BU and VULS.  BU is offering 15K/yr, while VULS and BC are not offering anything.  Unless BC matches I will most likely be crossing them off the list.

Now between BU and VULS, I also think I have to take the money.  The one major obstacle, is that I am extremely interested in Vandy's econ joint-degree program.  Any thoughts?

Also wait-listed at Northwestern.  If NU were to happen, then what? NU or BU$$?

How much are you getting from BU and what are the conditions for renewal?

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Wake Forest, Elon, or UNC?

I just got back from an Elon law visit. I also felt that they would provide a top notch quality education. Every bit as impressive /or more so than some tier 1's I've visited.  Being a newer school they are extremely interested in the success of their students and building a reputation.  I will be graduating from Villanova in May. I am accepted at Elon but have a few more visits to make before I decide. I don't feel like I would be comprising by attending Elon, they have an impressive program! I am waiting to hear on schlorship money. It seems to be against popular opinion but I to0 say "Show me the Money", I know I have what it takes to me successful!and I'd rather not have the debt!!

 ;D at a 0L.

I attend school the University of Texas at Tyler.  Without exception all of the people I have met on campus that want to practice law, want to attend law school in Texas (approximately 10 students).  I personally did not consider attending law school outside of Texas until the pre law advisor encouraged me to look at colleges outside of Texas.  I was wondering if it is normal for most students to generally only consider law schools in their state, is it a phenomenon unique only to Texas, or is it just coincidental that I know 10 other people that only want to go to law school in Texas?

If you want to stay in Texas, there is no reason to attend a lawschol outside of Texas.  Unlike most states, Texas has a Top Tier 1 to bottom Tier 4 and anything in between.  Texas has expensive private schools to cheap in-state schools.  You have everything you need.  The only exception is when you got accepted to schools much better than UT, such as Stanford, Columbia or Yale.

Anhything less than those schools, it's best to stick with Texas law schools.

Stetson has offered me a full tuition scholarship with a living stipend with a top 40% requirement.
UF has offered me 8K a year with a 3.2 GPA requirement (in-state)
I am aware that a specific class rank is not guaranteed at any school, but have heard that very few students at Stetson are ever even in jeopardy of losing this scholarship and given the expected rising cost of tuition at UF for the next three years, would not mind the difference of debt from Stetson if I were to lose the scholarship. I love the Tampa Bay area and love the Stetson campus and feel.

Would it be a bad decision for me to chose Stetson over UF?

How much is the living stipend from Stetson?

With the 8K from UF, you're basically looking at about $10K in tuition, right?

What if you're not at the top 40% at Stetson?  You'll be paying $45K a year (tuition plus living expenses) and you'll end up with a Stetson degree.  What if you don't have 3.2 at UF?  You'll still left with in-state tuition AND a UF degree.

If I were you, I'll stick with UF.  By the way, UF is not that far from Tampa and it dominates the Tampa market, just like Stetson, if not more, and any other market in Florida, which cannot be said about Stetson.

I'm thinking about transferring to St. Mary's.  I like San Antonio and its the only law school there.  Local job prospects look decent.
What school are you currently at?

Do you know that UT is 1.5 hour away?  And about 2.5 hours are three law schools.

I want to attend law school and eventually practice in North Carolina.  I have been accepted at Wake Forest and Elon so far and hope for an acceptance from UNC as well.  After visiting all these schools, Elon seemed like the best place to be.  They've also offered me a lot of money. I don't know what to do.  I went into my cycle with Elon being my last choice because it is so new. However, after visiting the school I feel like they have much more to offer in regards to actually educating me and preparing me for success.  Should I choose a school with long established prestige (and potentially better job prospects), or should I go with a better quality education at a new and exciting institution?

I know other people who have turned down offers from UNC and Wake Forest to attend Elon, and they don't regret it. However, they haven't graduated and experienced the market.  Then again, Elon's job placement for their class of 2009 was at 90% after 9 months.  This is pretty much in line with other schools in the state.  UNC and Wake were at about 95%.  I don't know what to do.  I had always dreamed of going to UNC, but I was so disappointed when I visited and sat in on a class, and spoke with the students and professors.  I really liked  Wake Forest and Elon.  Other schools in NC were a waste of my time, especially Charlotte and Campbell.  NCCU wasn't as bad as I thought, I just don't want to live in Durham. Advice anyone?

Do you have ANY idea how misleading those stats can be.  Do you know that they might have send out surveys to the top 15% of their grads only?  Do you know that they count working at Burger King or working part time making $12/hour at a solo's law firm as "employed?"

You're not going on a vacation, it does not matter how you "feel" about the class or the atmosphere.  Go to UNC or Wake Forest if the money is good.  3 years will go by before you know it.

You pre-1Ls are so naive, it's shocking!
