Studying for the LSAT / Studying timetable- please advise
« on: November 03, 2005, 11:50:17 PM »
I'm a junior and will be applying in Fall 2006. I have yet to take a practice test but I am thinking about either:

A) taking the LSAT in June after studying on my own for the semester (I'll be able to devote several hours on Saturday to studying)
B) taking the LSAT in February after taking a Powerscore class

I can't take a Powerscore class 2nd semester because it conflicts with an EC.

Any feedback on which option is better is appreciated. Or, if the answer depends entirely on my practice test results, let me know. Thanks!

P.S. Does it matter at all that if I take the June test I may be taking it in DC (not at home)?

Law School Applications / What to do/when to apply- Please help
« on: October 31, 2005, 02:50:53 PM »
I've been thinking about this for a while and I would appreciate any advice anyone has on my situation.

I would like to go to LS immediately after graduation, but it may not be in my best interest to apply at the end of this year (I'm a junior). If I apply after senior year, I can present 4 years of an upward grade trend and a GPA that's a bit higher than if I were to apply with only 3 years of grades. My GPA at the end of this year will probably be around 3.5. (I am at any Ivy, if it makes any difference but I know that's a topic for another thread.) At the end of senior year, I couldn't bring it up to much more than 3.65... I would have a completed thesis at that point if that makes any difference. I will probably have to make a decision between going to school with a big scholarship and going to the best school I can get into. I'm looking at schools around Boston since I want to practice in the area... the most prestigious schools I'm looking at are BC/BU. I haven't taken the LSAT but for the sake of the hypothetical, let's say it'll be 165.
I don't really want to take time off because as I mentioned, I really want to begin practicing as early as I can. I wouldn't really want to spend money on another degree but I could opt to get an MPA with a tuition discount using 2 classes from undergrad.
In terms of what I want after LS, I would really like to prosecute. I may end up doing the firm thing if I make the decision to go to a better school and take out loans versus getting more $ from a lower ranked school.

So, when should I apply? Thanks again for any advice you can offer.

Law School Applications / Asst. Dean of Admissions-->Address as Dean?
« on: October 12, 2005, 07:37:43 PM »
An assistant dean of admissions from a LS came to my school today for an info session... I ended up being the only one there so I wanted to write him a quick note. Do I address him as 'Dear Dean. X?' Thanks.

(He is _the_ dean of admissions as far as I can tell.)

Law School Applications / Addenum for time-intensive EC's?
« on: October 04, 2005, 08:42:35 PM »
Good idea or not a good idea: to write up a little something about an extracurricular activity that took up a lot of my time... not to explain away a subpar GPA, but because it was my main EC for 2 years, and to elaborate on the leadership positions I held and the activity itself. Thanks for your input.

Law School Applications / LS Rep Campus Visits
« on: September 23, 2005, 05:04:41 PM »
I'm a junior and planning on applying to law school next fall. A law school rep is visiting my campus Monday and I'm looking for some suggestions on some generally 'good' questions to ask. I'm going to do a bit of my own research over the weekend on the school, and I know it's a bad idea to ask about stuff that you can find out from their catalog, but if anyone has any suggestions for questions on some important or intelligent-sounding topics, I'd like to hear them. Thanks.

Studying for the LSAT / Powerscore/other weekend courses
« on: August 15, 2005, 02:09:03 PM »
Can anyone offer any advice as to the quality or value of a weekend test prep course, as opposed to a regular course? I'm interested in Powerscore in particular. Thanks.

Financial Aid / Effect of Ugrad loans on LS finaid
« on: July 29, 2005, 08:58:10 AM »
I am wondering how much (if any) impact my significant loans from ugrad will factor into finaid in law school. Will I be expected to double my debt or will the fact that I have so much in loans already qualify me for institutional grant aid? Thanks.

Law School Applications / Community Service
« on: July 29, 2005, 08:54:30 AM »
I just read Estrich's How to get into Law School and she said something along the lines of 'don't bother applying if you haven't done community service, especially if you're rich.' I was just wondering if this is an accepted truth. I am about to enter my junior year and so far I haven't done any community service. I have held a part-time job and been heavily involved in a few extracurricular activities, and I haven't found time to balance much else with my classes. (I'm not rich.) I really want to start doing something this year. Any suggestions on this topic or any rewarding community service activities you have had, please share. Thanks.
