Law School Admissions / Re: Will this hurt my app's
« on: June 29, 2005, 09:24:49 PM »
No, i'm not bitter, just stating facts. I have no white in my enviornment, mentality, personality. I am Black and proud and don't want being even 1 drop white to have to play a part in my life or law school app's but I will address it in an addendum.

And wouldn't u be a little bit bitter if a whole part of your family wanted nothing to do with you all because of the color of your skin??

You don't want one drop of white, but you want all the black so you can soak up the AA.  Stop crying and make it on your own.

Law School Admissions / Re: should i wait?

hi everybody.  up until about 2 days ago I was completely 100% applying to law school this (very early) fall.  I still know that I absolutely want to go to law school--I just wonder whether I should wait fall 2006 to apply--when I might look like a better applicant.  (I'm talking HYS, more probably CCN).

here's what I'm thinking--
1. I have a 173, so I wouldn't take the LSATs over
2. I have a 3.73.  I would spend this year concentrating on pulling that up to a 3.8.
3. My soft factors are fairly unimpressive.  If I wait, I'll have another (law related) job under my belt, as well as an extra activity or two at school.
4. My relationships with professors are downright poor.  I'm taking classes with professors I've had before, so I would work on cultivating some rec relationships with them over the next two semesters.  Honestly, however stupid it may sound, recs are my biggest concern right now.  I dont think any prof knows me well enough to write anything very compelling or convincing.

Thoughts?  I know that my numbers are good--I'm just really really concerned with my soft factors.  T14 schools get so many qualified applicants--why would they pick someone who isn't much more than a few good numbers?

Ideally I'd like to apply now (i really want to go to law school) but I also definitely want to go to a T14 and I dont want to screw up my apps by applying before I look that attractive.  Advice?

who cares you whiny female dog

I have just been looking over some app's from this cycle, I apply for Fall 2006 and was abit surprised by one of the questions.
I am mixed, Half Black and Half White, I fully associate with my Black side, I always mark black on job apps, any forms. I do not talk to the white side of the family, they want nothing to do with me, I'm over it now, lol. White Parent is not in my life either, he has other kids who are full-white who do not even know I exist.
Well I fully intend on marking black on my applications, but on University of Michigan  app it asks you specifically to mark any other races you may be mixed with. I will then have to mark White, unfortunately, and am wondering if this will hurt any chances I may have as being looked at as an URM on these app's.
I am not pleased about this because the white people in my family have had absolutely no contact with me my whole life, and I don't consider myself as having anything to do with any part of being white.
Is this going to hurt me??

This is not a flame, and not meant to be seen as offensive to white people,(I have white friends), I don't hate white people or anything but I am black and don't want adcomms to put my father's race against my apps.

You sound pretty bitter, do you have to rely on your race to get you in?  If so don't mark the white, if you can do it on your own who cares.  Sounds like you need the help though.

Studying for the LSAT / Re: Give Up on My Dream?
« on: June 29, 2005, 06:21:52 PM »
Hey guys, I have a problem.  I took the October 2004 lsat and got a 140. I attempted to take the December 2004 lsat and ended up canceling.  Then I took a powerscore course and took the June 2005 Lsat and only got a 142.  I don't know what else to do.  I want to take the test again, but my limit is up.  Unless I get permission from a dean of a law school to take the test again, I'll have to wait till october 2006 to take it again.  Should I give up my dream of going to law school because of this test or should I wait it out and retake it again in the future?  I am currently a grad student, so I have that going for me.

Yes give up.  Their's nothing wrong with changing a dream.

Under Represented Minority, or looking for a free handout

This isn't necessarily true. If someone isn't looking for a handout should they lie on the app and say they are white?

It's optional, plus I was just joking.  Personally, I like to earn my keep.
