General Board / The Search for Stipends
« on: April 17, 2006, 03:35:27 PM »
Advance apologies for posting this on a couple different boards.

I've accepted an International Law (domestically based) / Public Interest internship this summer.  I accepted it because my Law School usually gives stipends of $3000 for students that take such jobs, which really would have been a perfect amount to cover my expenses (well, 4K would have been better  ;)).  Due to high demand this year, however, domestically based students got a mere 1K, which should put me into homeless/starvation territory.  Both my current school's and undergrad's career services office haven't been much help, and general web searches seem to pull up a bunch of garbage/scams, but I'm pretty sure that there's some money out there for stuff like this.  Any advice/links/whatever?

I'm going to think outside the box a little bit and change my vote to the Silver Surfer.  He was responsible (along with the help of the Fantastic Four) for repelling the attack of Galactus.  I have to think he would be able to deal with Superman, or the Green Lantern.

The only way silver sufer could defeat green lantern is if he stole the physical green lantern, the green lantern uses the physical lantern to charge his ring (the ring that can make nukes), and their battle insued at a time period when the ring was not charged.

FYI green lantern has to recharge his ring ever 24 hours, much like a cell phone.

Respectively yours,
dkast

IIRC, Kyle Rayner no longer has to recharge his ring, but other GLs still do.

You guys need to read way more comics, arguments about superheroes that only focus on Justice League characters and Spider Man are lame.

Bah.  This is only page 2!  You have to give us a bit more time and I'm sure we'll bring some more characters into the discussion.  :D

kenxe:  Perhaps I was being a little pedantic.  The fact remains that Batman showed up to the fight prepared and Supes didn't.  It's like showing up to a hearing without an important document, except the document was kryptonite, green arrow, a tank, and a cool cybernetic suit.

You forgot the pill to simulate a heart attack, so Superman wouldn't continue to pummel him after the tables inevitably turned.  Remember even after all that, Bats doesn't win the fight, he just puts up a good fight.

How does Batman getting close to winning a fight against Supes after he has Green Arrow shoot Supes with a Kryptonite arrow constitute a 'fair fight'?   ???

Brings Superman down to the realm of being able to be physically defeated. Course we also have to add in the context of Superman over time. The 1950's superman could easily get his ass kicked by many beings. the superman of 2000 or even 1990 was coming into having almost godlike powers.

Wouldn't blocking the sun do a better job of accomplishing that?  Blocked sun + Superman = regular guy.  Kryptonite + Superman = badly weakened guy.

While I agree that Batman is sweet and has cool gadgetry, I take issue with your description of Batman as the "everyman" of superheroes.  Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, who is an ultra-rich multi-gazillionaire with unlimited resources at his disposal.  This hardly qualifies him as an "everyman" figure.

But, I still believe that he is the best superhero ever.

Well, the nonpowered guys have to be either independently wealthy (Batman, Green Arrow, Blue Beetle) or paid for their services (Booster Gold) in order to maintain a superhero lifestyle.

We haven't established criteria for 'best' here.  If we're talking about whom could take who in a fight, I think the Dark Knight Returns series established pretty firmly that Batman could take Superman in a fair fight, even if Batman was old and out of shape.  That's because Batman is awesome.  If we're talking about which superhero has had the greatest cultural impact, Superman certainly gets some more cred.

Patrick Bateman from American Psycho?  He didn't wear tights.
