Law School Admissions / Elites being disingenuous?
« on: August 27, 2005, 11:53:54 AM »
I just got a little book in the mail from Harvard, which says that they don't have any "cutoffs" for admission and while applicants will outnumber available seats, they invite everyone who would like to attend Harvard Law to apply.  Isn't this a little misleading?  They do list their LSAT/GPA medians, albeit as far away from the "everyone should apply" as possible.  Of course there is no "cutoff" for consideration, because if you an accept an application from whoever wants to apply and look at someone with a 155 for even 30 seconds, you've "considered" them, even though there's no chance in hell you'll accept them, probably not even with a 4.0 and a LOR from JFK himself.

I have a feeling if applicants were as loose with the facts as some of these schools, we'd find ourselves in some hot water come bar time...

Choosing the Right Law School / Interesting Rankings Article:
« on: August 21, 2005, 02:40:15 PM »
Here is an interesting article about the relationship between law schools and USNWR.  It deals with the very important issue of how school's desires to look good to USNWR has led to an increasingly "numbers only" admissions process.

Stake and his colleagues worry that some law schools, in order to elevate their rankings, have begun to rely more than ever on LSAT scores and grade-point averages -- two factors that weigh heavily in the publication's rankings. Such reliance means that students with more diverse backgrounds may be excluded from incoming classes.

"There goes the Peace Corps, there goes a Ph.D., there goes work experience," he said. He points to several ways law schools may try to increase their rankings -- to the detriment of law students.
