i would take the money. if you also want a law-related job, get some bs p/t research asst job that you can spend 5-10 hours a week on. you're supposed to do something law related, but in this case 1) the job will be more impressive, and 2) everyone will understand. you don't really learn anything from the 1L summer job.
If you have no practical legal experience/knowledge by the time you are applying for 2L summer positions youll look like an idiot in comparison to the others. Something to keep in mind, on top of the fact 1L jobs can garner 2L jobs either at the same firm or via connections.
I disagree. The vast majority of folks don't get REAL 1L gigs anyway. Most folks are interning for a judge, working in public interest, or researching for a prof.
MOST 2L summer associates get their gigs b/c of grades, law review, and/or connections. Legal experience over that first summer helps, but it's not vital. Besides, the OP could just work for a prof 10 hrs/wk or volunteer in PI law for a day a week.
