Studying for the LSAT / Practice Tests- Your Thoughts?

Practice LSAT exams:
Questions:
1.Should you or did you outright take a practice exam before you did any studying to see where you stand and how much you need to improve? Or should you study for a while and then take your first practice exam?
2. How many practice exams did you take or should you take before you think you can be ready?
I know it may be different from person to person and that's why I'm curious about this....Also, I know for question #2 someone might respond and say take as many as you think you need, but on average, what would be a fair amount of practice exams to take? 10?
