Where should I go next fall? / Florida Coastal School of Law
« on: March 21, 2004, 06:25:13 PM »
Anyone thinking about attending in the fall?  I applied 3/14 and my acceptance letter was dated 3/15 (definitely the fastest I've heard back from anyone) and it came with a scholarship offer.  Right now I'm considering it simply because its the only place I've been admitted so far.  Its not too far from my home in Atlanta and I love Jacksonville...and I'm also determined to go to law school this fall.

Just wondering if anyone else was considering it and what your thoughts are.

2.87/150, 154

Pending:  GSU, Whittier, Thomas Jefferson, LSU and Southwestern  (all of which I think may be a better bet than Florida Coastal except maybe TJ, but not sure I'll get into any of them)

Dings:

Pepperdine
Loyola-New Orleans
Mercer
Florida State

Still being considered (and have been complete at all for awhile):
University of Florida (big shock I haven't been dinged yet!)
Stetson
Louisiana State
Cal Western
Thomas Jefferson
Southwestern
Georgia State

WL:
Valparaiso

Numbers:  2.87/150, 154
TONS of ECs (leadership positions in most), 3 really good LOR, very strong resume (I worked all through high school and college, including 4 years legal secretary/paralegal experience) and what I thought was a strong PS

This is how I currently see my situation...if it were down to Cal Western, Thomas Jefferson and Southwestern I'm not sure which to pick.  I think that Southwestern is the best school with the best employment prospects.  However, I think I'd like San Diego more than LA, so I was leaning towards Cal Western.  Also think if I had to end up living in one of those places for the rest of my life I'd prefer San Diego.

How competitive do you feel you are as far as jobs in LA, having to go up against UCLA, Loyola, etc grads?  Have you done OCI or much with Career Services yet?  What is the calibur of firms that come to do OCI?  Is Career Services helpful?

Ok, that's all I have for now.  Thanks!

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Entertainment law in la - help

Check that out.  Its a list of where Southwestern grads have landed top entertainment law jobs.  Granted, every school has some grads they can brag about and that they like to focus on, but I thought this was an impressive list.  Obviously, Loyola and USC are ranked higher and probably have higher visibility in LA and definitely across the country, but I was impressed with this list anyhow.

I've applied to Southwestern, so if you have anymore questions about it I might be able to answer them since I've done some research on them.

I applied to Cal Western, Thomas Jefferson and Southwestern.  From my research I would put them in this order from best reputation down: Southwestern, Cal Western, Thomas Jefferson.  Though, I think they're all fairly close to equal.  I get the feel from all three that faculty are very accessible and that the environment is a friendly one at all three schools.

Right now I'm leaning towards Cal Western.  Going for a visit in a few weeks, so maybe that'll solidify it.

PS...Also depends on what kind of law you think you're interested in.  Southwestern has a really good entertainment law program for a lower-tiered school.
