Financial Aid / Campus Door
« on: June 28, 2005, 04:05:25 PM »
I have been approved for a loan by this company with less than favorable terms, but no cosignor which was extremely important for me.

Anyone ever dealt with them?  I have not seen them mentioned on here.  My school has them on "their list of lenders", but all the other lenders on their list, I've encountered people who have had some kind of experience with them.  I'm not worried about the authenticity of the company since they were referred by the school, but would like to know if anyone else has dealth with them and the timing etc.

Thanks

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / New Basement Apartment - PO Box?
« on: June 23, 2005, 09:13:16 AM »
I just secured an apartment for law school.  It is in the basement of a woman's house and the area is safe and conveniently located.  I was a little weary about renting a basement apartment at first, but I have found out that in the area I will be in, that is very common.

The woman seems very nice and is almost as excited about me going to law school as I am (especially b/c she obtained her undergrad degree from the same school).  My question is this.  When applying for jobs and stuff, I will want to make sure I get EVERY envelope/correspondence that comes back to me.  While I don't think she would do anything, she has two teenage sons and she gets home at 8 pm every night, so they will be getting the mail.  My question is, should I consider getting a PO Box?  They are not that expensive, or do they not look "as good" on a resume?  This may be a silly question, but any input would be appreciated.  Thanks  :)

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Law School Preview at NYU

I live in Westchester and will be going to school in Long Island.  I will be moving into my apartment for school in late July, so depending on how much moving I get done before the class starts will determine whether I'm coming from LI or Westchester.

Financial Aid / Re: Citibank private loan fees???

If you don't mind, can you tell me what your credit score was, and if you were approved without a co-signor and decided to go with a co-signor because of the cheaper rate.  I am looking to use them and really do not want to use a cosignor regardless of what the rate may be.

Yes thanks Melinda.  Nice to hear some positive things about the program as I will be taking it in August.  Also good to get a heads up on the reading suggestions.

Wait List / Re: In off NYLS's waitlist
« on: June 09, 2005, 12:28:53 PM »
Congratulations on NYLS.  I was accepted to NYLS and Hofstra and waitlisted at St. Johns.  I will be attending Hofstra in the fall.

As per your question on which school is better, it's a hard one to answer.  As per US News Report Hofstra is better.  It is a 2nd tier school while NYLS is not ranked.  I think the name also holds a little more weight, as it is associated with a University.  I think that if you want to work in LI then Hofstra is the best choice by far.  If you want to work in Manhattan, then I think that either will be fine, if you do well in your class. For the Manhattan jobs, you are competing with lots of people, from other T14 schools as well as the big NY schools (Fordham, Columbia and NYU).  Not to mention St. Johns, Cardozo Pace etc.  So I don't really think either of them will get you that much of an edge in the job field, it wil depend more on who well you do in your class.  I'm biased of course, but I must say that the Hofstra Alumni appear to be very supportive of their graduates, and look out for them.

Hope that helps.

LOTS of threads on here about this and many of them are recent.  Do a search including "Law Preview or "Barbri" and you'll find tons of answers.
