"To avoid your own slavery, you enslave."

**gong rings**

This is my word of wisdom.

I fail to see the wisdom.

he is promoting pre-emptive attack, i.e. if we think Iran will develop nukes and attack us, we should take them out before they have the chance to...

I do not see any wisdom in that.

and again:  how you propose to maintain occupation without army that can do it?

start drafting people.  get serious or get out.

Unfortunately, if our current admin continues to insist we stay, teh draft is the only way we will be able to raise enough troops.  But if Bush did institute the draft, it would be the end of the Republican party.

That is true.  Hate is quite a broad term.  But I would argue there are those that do hate us as a result of our government's foreign policy.

There are Americans living safely in every one of the countries that you imagine hate us except for Afgh and Iraq which are still war zones. There are nationals - ordinary people - from every one of those countries who wait in long lines, cross deserts to come and live among us, and who bless their luck when they do. I would wager that there are vastly more of those people in each country than the number of people who actually hate "Americans". Don't believe it. That's just AM radio stuff.

I am sure there are.  And there are those groups out there that have developed a hatred for the US directly as a result of our foreign policy.  To think otherwise would be naive.

"tolerated" would probably be the best term to describe France's sentiment, historically, towards the US

1. Would there *be* a United States without France?
2. Where did the Statue of Liberty come from? Albania?
3. Where did every American writer/artist/musician of any merit live in the early 20th C?
4. Oh, there's so much more

I would whole heartedly agree that both countries have taken ample "interest" in one another.  But to go as far as disclaiming that France generally "welcomes" the US is, imho, a bit of a stretch.

France

You'd be hard pressed to find a country that has liked and welcomed Americans as much and as consistently as France has.

possibly "welcomed," but "liked" may be a stretch.

So you're honestly telling me you don't think we, as Americans, impose our culture on anyone.  Have you ever traveled out of this country?

Bingo!
There is a reason why certain countries hate us.  And it is not because they despise our freedom.
Which "countries" hate "us", just out of curiosity?
"Countries" in the generalized sense.  More aptly, certain groups within certain countries would be more accurate.  Extremists would be even more accurate...and any other country that has nukes pointed in (or will have them pointed in)our direction.
"Us" symbolizing all of us that living the the US.

Yeah. Big difference between countries and extremists. Our whole foreign policy is based on a failure to make that distinction.

They - the extremists - do not hate us. The hate how our government behaves on our behalf. That is also a distinction with consequences, and therefore quite important.

That is true.  Hate is quite a broad term.  But I would argue there are those that do hate us as a result of our government's foreign policy.
