I can't tell you how much I wish I had someone else to take over my life during laundry, run errands, etc.  I couldn't handle living with my parents, and I'm 6 hours away at school...but if you get along well and they respect your privacy and your need for space to study I would go for it.

Actually dave303 is right...I just want you to do poorly in your 1L classes while I'm a 2L, at another school.  Not because I want to be in the top 10%, but because I hate you.

I feel better now that I've said it right out...

Seriously, what?!?!

I've let you all down....I feel terrible.

Waste of money--don't do it.

I know that this time before 1L is driving you crazy and you don't know what to do...but don't give in and waste a bunch of money now!  Law school is expensive as it is!

What SHOULD you do?  I want to say that you should relax and have fun and stop thinking about it.  I know you won't do that, though!  I'll try to remember to look for the list of books our law school gave incoming 1Ls to look at before school started.  I think they felt like I feel should be relaxing but I know you won't so I'll just give you something less expensive/time consuming than what you're thinking you should do to take up some time/calm your anxieties.

Somebody, if I forget to post the list (or post something about how I can't find the list), email me at and I'll get on it!

The laptop bag thing is definitely good advice. If your bag says "Dell" on the outside, it's pretty much a guarantee that the mugging will pay off for a would-be thief. :(

I definitely advocate having fun over the summer, but I don't consider 5-7k "chump change."  I was glad I brought some money in because school is stressful and the loans just add to the stress level.

As a current 1L, my advice to you would be this:  make a bunch of money this summer to cut down on your loans.  That's what I did, and I was very pleased.  No trouble getting a summer law job for the summer after 1L without any legal experience to speak of.

Good luck!

This depends so much on your employer.  I told mine and they acted like children--got mad and said to leave that day, even though I had meetings scheduled and had a lot of wrap up work left to do.  It wasn't because they were happy to get rid of me, either, I had just gotten a merit raise and was nationaly recognized for my work within the company.  I still got paid, though, because they didn't want me to go get unemployment.  :)

I don't think that they use this information in that way.  Schools want to know who their big competitors are so that they can tailor admissions efforts and market the school accordingly.

Actually, talking on your cell while you walk is considered LESS safe, not more.  It makes you seem pre-occupied/not alert.  The best thing you can do is walk alone only when you must, look all around (criminals don't want to think that you could identify them if you got away), and avoid unsafe areas.

If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, look them in the face and start to memorize what they look like.  They will see it in your face and move on to easier prey.

As for a self defense class...they are way fun.  You'll probably feel more secure if you take one.

Oh, another thing I just remembered---if you have a car, put a mirror on the trunk so that you can see what's behind you when you're digging in it.  :)
