Where should I go next fall? / Re: Life in San Diego...

For anyone who might know, how friendly are the students at USD?  If I end up there, I'd be coming from across the country and alone.  Making some friends would be pretty important to me, so I'm wondering if people generally chill with each other or if most people are from the area and do their own thing.

When I lived in SD I was in undergrad but I do remember the people being very friendly.  No one is really a SD native and so everyone is looking to make friends.  I have lived alot of places because my husband is in the Coast Guard and the san Diegans were by far the friendliest and most fun!

Also look at www.sdreader.com.  The previous poster is right about La Mesa, Spring Valley ect.  Dont even go there.  It is no bueno! La Jolla UTC is great but very pricey.  Mission Valley, Mission Beach, Mission Hills are all great.  PB and OB are very expensive but very close to bars ect if that is what you are interested in.  I had an apartment right off the 5 at the Claremont Bay, Mission Drive exit that was awesome.  It is about 1100 for a one bedroom apartment (much better than what I am looking to pay in SF).  Alot of ammeneties ect.  It would be about a 10 min drive to USD and you could easily take back roads and never have to even get on the freeway although it isnt bad in that area. Just stay away from the 15 anywhere near Scripps Ranch and Escondido and the 8 near SDSU.

Exactly.  And I'm comfortable with it.  I'll get a bike and just take off from the nearest BART station every day.  Do readings/etc. on my way there and back.  It's not so bad.  Better than the crappy buses I had to take here.

And mrsdclare, I'm J.

Nice to meet you J!  ;D

My husband does aviation and will be stationed at the San Francisco airport.  There is also a CG base in Alameda.  I dont know if they are in Santa Clara or not.. guess I will find out ;)

There is a Coast Guard station in Pt. Reyes in West Marin, which is pretty much the most plum assignment I can think of. It's sort of like being stationed in the middle of a state park on a beautiful section of state coastline, complete with an old lighthouse, because the station is in the middle of a state park on a beautiful section of state coastline, complete with an old lighthouse.

My husband is in aviation and unfortunately cannot be stationed there.  :( We are just happy to be in SF.  We were in corpus christi texas for four months too long... ;)

Yeah, we've talked about it.  I'd much rather accommodate her wishes, though.  That's because she's already being a big benefit to me just by being there, in the first place.  There are other reasons that I won't discuss here.  Suffice to say, if she wants to stay in Walnut Creek (which I love), I'm okay with that.  Even if it means 45 minutes to an hour there and back every day.  I did that for three years here.

Where are you headed in the fall OPC?

Is the Coast Guard based in Santa Clara?

Have you thought about living a little bit higher on the peninsula?  That commute is killer.  Although, there is CalTrain that you can take to BART, which can take you to the airport.  Alameda is basically as far north as the airport, but on the other side of the bay.

Where would you suggest living? I was thinking Santa Clara... what do you mean higher on the pennisula? What town would that be? Sorry I know very little about SF, you can teach me :)

There are some nice places to live in San Mateo, which is literally next to the airport (not in a bad way, so much.)  Other considerations might be Daly city or even some southern parts of san francisco, like the excelsior or outer mission districts.  Potrero hill would be good, although it starts to get a little pricey.  The 101 through Cupertino, etc is a parking lot though.  Check out 511.org sometime during commute times. That will give you an idea of traffic patterns.

Thanks mister!! Do you live there now? Good thing I lived in So Cal and am somewhat used to traffic. :)

FYI: Santa Clara to SFO is 40+minutes without traffic. You can also check out Palo Alto, but I would agree with tj on Daly City and San Mateo for affordable rent and proximity. You could try the East Bay too, at least you can take BART without transferring from Caltrain.

Thanks for the information.  I had no idea! Good thing we are going to just stay in a hotel for a week or so while we get acclimated to the city.  My husband wanted to stay in a hotel until I heard from all the schools....  :o I was like, honey we could be there until April!!!!! So many decisions.....
