i am an IT director and attending law school in the fall. I see tons of laptops. They are all a bit hit and miss. I have seen my share of Dells, Toshiba's, HP/Compaq and IBM Think pads fail.
I suggest looking at slickdeals.net or fatwallet.com and search for laptops. There are often good deals to be had. Be sure to get at least 512 megs of RAM for XP. CD burner, USB key (purchased separately), built in 802.11g are pretty much what you want to have. These days the HDs are pretty big and even budget celeron processors are pretty quick.
XP Home is fine, only thing XP Pro will get you is the ability to join a domain and an web server (which 99% of people won't need).
