Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Waitlist observation
« on: June 23, 2005, 07:27:59 AM »
Being on a waitlist has led to some interesting observations that I'm wondering if other people are experiencing.

First, has anyone noticed that time moves very distinctly when one is on a waitlist?  An example is the 'do you still want to be on a waitlist' email that some have received recently.  My version of that email said that they would be going to their waitlist by the end of this month.  Now, I received this email 8 days ago.  But before I actually looked it up, I could have SWORN that I got that email at LEAST a couple of weeks ago.  It feels like being stuck in a slow motion scene in a movie.

Yet, when I look at the date on the calendar, and I still don’t know IF I’m going to law school or not (I had a very location-specific process this cycle), it seems like time is moving at a million miles an hour…with only 9 weeks left until orientation starts, I want to stop time, if that would allow my waitlist school time to figure out who they want.

The other observation (that mostly my friends have picked up on) is that I spend what is approaching an unhealthy amount of time looking at this board, lurking about in case there is any tiny morsel of information that might let me know my fate.  They have sworn to beat me with a big stick if they hear me say one more time “well, I read on the board that….”.

Anyway, at least by posting this I’ll have new posts to read.  You know it’s bad when you still don’t know if you are starting school this year, and people are already starting to post for the next cycle, LSN is preparing their 2005-06 stuff, etc...

bhsueiu... you get the WL email today?

posted this in the wailist forum, but figured there was a better chance of you seeing it here

Yep...despite the huge flip-floppy-stomach thing it gave me with the subject heading "UNC Law - Waitlist"...I guess it's a good sign-they asked those who were no longer interested in staying on the waitlist to let them know, in preparation for movement.  So at least they may actually go to thier waitlist this year.

I had heard that there were some phone-stalkers out there calling every week.  Figure it's a bad thing when they know you for that reason. If I ever get the chance to give some advice, I would recommend that they post an FAQ for waitlisters similar to what U. Mich has...  Seems like a proactive way to handle it.  And I have to say, hearing ANYTHING from them was nice-at least I know they haven't lost my email :)

Did they hand out the recommended reading list?  Is it similar to that found in PLS or other prep materials?

Did they give any information about prepping for school?  Anything admits should be doing now to prepare?

Thanks for the advice Fireplace...way ahead of you.  Wouldn't call it 'begging' per se, but I'm definitely campaigning.

fingers crossed!

Is this for me Fireplace?  Well, like you (if I remember right) I only applied to Duke and UNC this year (UNC being the top choice).  Duke rejected me, UNC waitlisted me.  If I don't get off the waitlist, I'll apply again next year (and consider retaking the LSAT), but include schools out of state as well, and include a couple of safeties.  I considered NCCU, which (despite what people here would say) has a great reputation in NC for those that plan to stay here, but there is a particular professor I want to work with at UNC, and I'm dying to work in thier clinical programs.  I just couldn't see applying to or attending a school that I wasn't truly excited about (it's hard enough giving up a decent salary and professional opportunities to start this new chapter in my life...I feel I must do it for a school I'm really enthusiastic about.)

Bump (would like to hear about what you all learn at pre-orientation...I'm still waitlisted)

Incoming 1Ls / Re: Laser printer update...

Can someone tell me again why we need a laserprinter?  Yes, I know we will be printing reams of outlines, etc.  But I was leaning towards an all-in-one inkjet that has fax, scan and copy capabilities.  I figured that access to a fax would be useful come recruiting time, ability to scan notes/commercial outlines for mixing in with my own outlines, etc. could be useful.

Any thoughts, especially from those that have finished first year?

Definitely more weight given to undergrad GPA.  Other factors can overcome your index score however, like URM status, WE, graduate degrees, etc.
