Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Duke vs. UVA
« on: April 30, 2005, 05:35:26 PM »
Absolutely not. They are equal schools and how well you will do in your career will be based your individual efforts rather than if you went to Duke or UVA.  This is not just my own opinion but that of a managing partner at a major DC law firm as well.

If you wanted to go to Duke over HYS than it is a different story.

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: WUSTL or W&L with money?
« on: April 30, 2005, 05:15:01 PM »
W&L definitely because of the money.  Plus WashU's high ranking is pretty new.  People making hiring decisions (older partners) probably have a better opinion of W&L than WashU.

but W&L has slipped of late.... they have consistently been in the top 20 (albeit at 19 and 20 year after year) but in the last two, they've been outside it, and although one or two spots honestly do not matter, i am unsure if this is an anomaly or a trend of things to come.

You really put THAT much faith in magazine rankings?

Financial Aid / Re: Michigan Fin Aid awards
« on: April 30, 2005, 01:25:48 PM »
They got me my award letter the day they say my file went complete.

Would have been a relief, but they gave me no aid.  That was a really
big suprise, because my wife and I (and my parents) don't have/make
very much money.  My fafsa contribution number was well below tuition.
Now I'm more than a little nervous about how I'm going to pay for law
school without having to slave at Big law for several years (if I can
even get into big law)

If you graduate from UM you should be able to get a lucrative job.

Well you should first worry about getting a real LSAT score.  Without it all discussions are pretty idle speculations.  A close second is your downward trend in your GPA, which will raise serious red flags.

As an aside, you are serious about the law you should be willing to spend three years anywhere where you will get an adequate legal education.  Are you sure you have the committment for legal study?

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Columbia info (anyone?)
« on: April 29, 2005, 09:21:44 PM »
I was looking at the 1L summer placements for UVA, and although 1/3 go to firms, only about 25 students go to DC and NYC combined (where I want to go).

I wanted to know if anyone has stats for 1L summer placements for Columbia law school. One reason, im leaning towards UVA is money, but if going to Columbia gives me a much better shot at firm internship my first summer then the difference shrinks from 40 to 30 or so.

I really would like to know how many of the 1L's go to firms during summer. thanks in advance

UVA's placement in NYC is lower than most of its peer schools probably because more of its student body come from and want to work in the South.

Thanks for your responses. I have sent the deposit to UVA. Look forward to meeting many of you and enjoying law school in general.

Good luck.

do u guys think i have any hope?

I am going to say that if they chose to waitlist you then that was something about you that they found attractive.  Otherwise they could have just sent you a rejection, right?

With Cardozo being a safety school for many people I would say that they need to use the waitlist a lot.

You can help youself if you play it right.

Treat like any interview wherein you have a chance to "sell" youself as an applicant.
