Incoming 1Ls / On Campus or Off Campus Housing
« on: March 08, 2006, 07:13:44 AM »
Where are you going to live during 1L? in university housing or private apt. or are you going to commute? please share your plan.  I will probably live in school housing, mainly becasue for the first year, I don't want to isolate myself and by living in unversity dorms I can meet more people.  Plus, I don't have a truck, and won't be able to move all my furnitures across country.  Dorms are at least furnished so I don't need to buy everything.

Seeing that I got waitlisted by Fordham and GTown, it is extremely unlikely I will get anywhere in the T14 or even T20.  Even if I do get in, I will then need to worry about how am I gotta pay for the education.  For now, I have pretty much narrowed down the choices to 3.  After intense calculation, I estimated 3 year total cost from each school to be:

Minnesota - 100k
Illinois - 85k
Iowa - 50k

If I got in any T14, I probably will drop Minnesota and still consider Iowa and Illinois for their cheaper price tag.

Choosing the Right Law School / Iowa - What are they good for?
« on: February 27, 2006, 12:52:28 PM »
Iowa has always been ranked in the top 25, but I seriously don't see why they deserve such ranking.  They are located in a very small town, far away from any major legal market, it doesn't have such a strong national reputation and the school doesn't seem particularly strong in any field.  Can someone explain to me why they are so highly regarded?

Law School Admissions / Summer School?
« on: February 24, 2006, 09:45:37 PM »
I believe Iowa and Cardozo among admit 1L for summer school.  What are some advantages of starting 2-3 months early?  Do you save a semester?

Incoming 1Ls / Outlines and Hornbooks

I heard people talking about outlines and hornbooks a lot around here.  What are they and how do they differ from one another?

Incoming 1Ls / Best 1L guide book
« on: February 23, 2006, 12:34:11 PM »
I don't know much about law school and I am a little scared about going to law school.  I would like to read some 'general study guide' type of books, such as Law School Confidential by Robert Miller.
I would like the book to focus on how to study, rather than how to pick a school or how to take the LSAT (1/3 of the Miller book is wasted on such topics).
Any suggestions?

Law School Admissions / Univ of Iowa
« on: February 17, 2006, 07:14:31 PM »
I have been accepted at Iowa with reasonable scholarship offer.  I think this is probably the best price/quality ratio I will get out of any top 30.  I don't really want to work for big law, so top 14 isn't very important.  The only problem I see with Iowa is its location.  I am from NYC so the population of 1 million for the state of Iowa seems tiny.  I don’t know if there will be any job opportunity out of school in Iowa, or if I want to stay in the Midwest or go back East.
Can anyone who knows more about this school give me some more information.

Law School Admissions / Confusing letter from U Colorado
« on: February 15, 2006, 12:37:15 PM »

I received a scholarship offer from Colorado for ‘half in-state tuition’, and in this same letter they indicated that the value of my scholarship this year is ‘18k’.  This doesn’t quite make sense because 18k is a lot more than ‘half in-state tuition’.  So, does it mean that this 18k is the total amount to be distributed over 3 years?
