Choosing the Right Law School / Pitt - where are yinz living?
« on: March 27, 2005, 06:39:37 PM »
I've decided on Pitt.  I will be moving in with a friend from high school who will be a mechanical engineering grad student starting in the fall.  We're starting to look for places now.  Does anyone familiar with Pittsburgh have any suggestions?  I have a buddy at Pitt undergrad who lives in Oakland, and his particular part of town scares me.

I heard something about Squirrel Hill?  I'm vaguely familiar w/ the area as my girlfriend lives in North Hills (parents would kill us if we lived together).  The only constraint that I have is my dog.

You'll also notice from the subject line of this thread that I'm working on my Pitt vocab.  Ok.  Gotta go red up my room now.

Law School Admissions / Re: Had it with Case

I have two friends who attend Case undergrad.  They are very unhappy with the communication between the administration and the students/families.  I commend your actions.  It's a shame that someone as bright as yourself will end up in Columbus  ;).

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Re: Hold at Case Western

That really sucks, especially since your numbers are way above their medians.  USF tried to pull the same thing with me, the whole "Sure you're overqualified for this school and all, but wouldn't you like to spend 30k a year to come here?" thing.

Besides, Case is awwwfully expensive even by law school standards.  They jumped up to $31,800 this year. I wonder if it has to do with all the money they're putting into updating their library?

I went ahead and sent them a letter of continuing interest, because I really am interested. I figure I'll work on the acceptance first, and the aid later. I've put seat deposits elsewhere, and if Case never does come through with money, I just won't go there.

I refuse to let Case win this game.  I think the way they handled this situation is ridiculous.  Not just for me, but for the people who are even more qualified than I.
Pitt increased my scholarship, so I'll be going there.

Good luck to all of you who are sticking with it.

Incoming 1Ls / Re: Negotiating with schools for $
« on: March 25, 2005, 06:37:17 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with this type of situation?

I've gotten scholarship $ at a higher ranked school (X) and would like to possibly parlay it into $ at a school about ten slots down (Y).  However, the X's tuition is about three times the cost of Y and even with the scholarship X is twice as much.  What do you guys think?

Conversely, I've got two schools that are dead even in the rankings with no scholarship $ at either.  However, one school is $10,000/year more than the other.  Anyone tried to negotiate on that basis?

you have to use more than just the fact that one school is more expensive than another.  for example, i discussed my love of pittsburgh, and connections to the city (fiancee lives there).

as far as your 2nd scenario with two comparable schools, i'd go for it.  just let them know what a big factor financing is in your decision.

i used the fact that i got $66,000 at slu (final tuition $5500/yr), a full ride at akron, and $4500/yr at temple (final tuition $8500/yr).  pitt ended up giving me enough to make it less than slu.  THAT was an offer i couldn't refuse.

As long as you know to whom you're writing, send the email.  Deadlines are approaching, and it's not like email is unprofessional.  Plus, email is less obtrusive than opening an envelope.

I sent the email to pitt yesterday at 3am.  today at 11am they emailed back increasing my scholarship from $8000 to $14,000 per year...  IT WORKED!

I didn't get anything at all.  Not even a Hold.

Well, a lot of ppl around cleveland got theirs yesterday.  i'm about 100 miles away in pa and got mine today, and if you're in st. louis, i'd guess yours will arrive tomorrow.  of course, you got your apps in late, so it could be weeks...  good luck, though!

are you in st. louis now?  how do you like it?

Im not withdrawing my app, though.  i want to make them sweat it out.

is anyone else getting a kick out of the username "youranidiot"

the irony is that it should be "you'reanidiot"

C'mon!

It's unintentional comedy gold!

I haven't yet decided if it was intentional or not.
