Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Re: AU Waitlist
« on: May 19, 2005, 06:56:07 AM »
Hello again au2005!

My take on the movement: Spankster may have gotten off PT. HoyaSaxa certainly did. It appears the website states that FT is full and they are accepting people for PT.

Summergirl: Thus far, I appear to be the only person to actually get in off the FT waitlist. But then again, as au2005 will probably agree from our last thread, I'm not even sure I was supposed to be WL'd in the first place. I had sent a letter to AU after I was waitlisted because I really liked the school, a week later I was accepted.

Nonetheless, good luck to you both

Look at it this way, beyond the obvious HYS... most law schools benefit from the visibility of their undergraduate programs. Tulane is up there, in the top 50 -- in terms of undergraduate... American is a little more under the radar, down in the 80's.

Also heres a good observation for you. "National" perception of schools may be driven by their prominence on an NCAA sports level. Look at Tulane, and their football team... American, nothing.

woah there... 3.2, 164, cs, college park... i go to cp... do we know each other??? lol

I got in off the waitlist last Thursday the 28th. However, I'm not sure yet if this means that American is going to the waitlist... I applied late (Mid-Feb, but took the Feb LSAT) and was waitlisted the 8th. No one else on LSN has been accepted off the WL, and its been over a week now... so I would have expected if they were, then people would be getting off of it.

I drafted a quick letter just to tell AU that I was interested and that I would accept a spot in either program. I only applied to AU, GW, and Georgetown, was rejected from the latter two -- I figured that, since I wanted to go to AU -- why waste a year now if I'm just gonna end up there the next year.

Anyhow, the letter went out Friday the week before and Thursday morning, I got the call from the dean. Maybe the letter made them review my file again... maybe they waitlisted me because they thought I would end up elsewhere... who knows... all I know is, I'm goin to AU full time next year... and I am quite happy about it

If I had any advice... I'd say, send them a letter... if you haven't yet.

Good luck

I'm goin to au in the fall so heres what i have to say about this: If you want to stay in DC, come to AU.

In my opinion, its the third best school in the area behind Gtown and GW. I have talked to several well respected attorneys, and one in particular who is a recruiter for his BIGLAW firm, and he said that AU grads are always more distinguished than GMU or UMD grads.

At this point, according to the new rankings (and further proving their worthlessness), American, UMD and GMU are all now clustered at 41 with American is alone at 47.

But it all boils down to what you want in a school. I've read about people's experiences at the admit day Friday, and I have to say, the things that people cited such as a "less competitive atmosphere"... it seems like the environment at American is much more about learning and expanding your knowledge than who can get the best grades (especially that great part about no mandatory curve). I've been there for 4 years as an engineering major at UMD, its not fun.

All the people on this board are so focused on BIGLAW and BIG starting salaries. Its not what happens when you get your first job its what you do with your degree. Make or break a couple big cases, and you'll be set for life.

Good luck on your choice. Maybe I'll see you there in the fall.

I was accepted to the full-time program yesterday... off the waitlist. Needless to say I'll be at American in the fall.

My numbers are pretty good and I was somewhat dissapointed that I was waitlisted in the first place... but I assumed that because I applied late (mid-February) that this was the reason.

I was floored it happened so quickly... I just sent a letter and the reply form last Thursday... and the deadline is not until May 2nd!

Who knows, but, I'm really happy. They have a really good clinical intellectual property program!

I'm in the same position. It's not so much for me about "prestige" but more like, I want to get a quality education and go somewhere I know is a good school, where I can do well, but don't have to finish in the top 5% of my class to be offered a job somewhere. Plus, I have to stay in D.C.

That pretty much leaves AU, GW, and Georgetown. I applied late to all three, because I took the Feb. LSAT. Thus far we are on the waitlist at AU, and not surprisingly, rejected at GTown. So, we await GW.

I guess because I am just graduating from college I can afford to wait, maybe retake the LSAT, and apply early in the cycle next year. That is, assuming I don't get off the waitlist. Also, I have some things I'd like to do and maybe I just need a year off to do them... who knows. But, as we play the waiting game, I am definitely considering putting it off.

Depends on your career aspirations and competitiveness.

See... if your end goal is $. Graduating in the top 5-10% at gmu might equate to being in the top 50% at Gtown. If you are competitive... and you think you will do better than top 50% at gtown. go there. you'll make more than enough more $ to cover the 50k difference

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: American...will we hear this week?

Actually you are probably half wrong... i applied february 16th and according to lsn, they probably just started with the february apps last week. I'd say if you applied before January 15 and haven't heard yet, dont expect to hear until after april, otherwise we should still be in good shape
