Denials / Re: University of Texas - my first ding!

I had gotten my hopes up today because I saw two people with high LSAT's and low GPA's were accepted on LSN in the past 72 hours, but they were both in-state.

You're in good company.  :)

Acceptances / Re: For those accepted to t10 school (your PS)
« on: March 28, 2005, 01:35:46 PM »
I didn't mention law school or law or anything at all academic or career-related in my personal statement.  I just talked about a cool experience.  I don't know if that helped me get into HYS etc, or if I was admitted in spite of it.   ;D

My assumption was that the adcomms already knew that I wanted to go to law school, just by the fact that I was bothering to jump through all their hoops to apply.  I felt like anything that I could have written about *why* I wanted to go or what I envisioned myself doing with my degree would have sounded trite and immature, like a 5-year-old's assertion that she wants to be a doctor when she grows up so she can help sick people.

Yeah, I think if you're younger, that makes the most sense; however, if you're an older applicant like me, then if you don't answer the "why law now" question it's like the elephant in the room.  I didn't get into a T10-- didn't have the numbers-- but I have gotten in to a bunch of reach schools. I didn't really write about why I want to be a lawyer; the focus of my PS was actually a particular experience and then I was able to weave in the answers to the questions.

Yeah, I think that if law school represents a career change you have to address it.  My PS is about a conversation concerning the gaps between translation theory and publishing practice, and it subtly speaks to "no-as-a-matter-of-fact-I'm-not-a-professional-student," something that I thought might be a negative in my application.

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Negotiating with schools for $
« on: March 25, 2005, 08:53:03 AM »
I did send out some letters a month or so ago, like MC I'm not sure if the awards I subsequently received are as a result of this communication or not.  I've scattered this info all over this site, but I'll put it all here (all of the schools below received a letter that notified them of top acceptances and a scholarship offer from W&M):

--USC:  nothing.
--GW:  nothing.  They claim not to negotiate on scholarships.
--W&L:  $10,500 annually (potential for increase on the basis of performance/tuition increases).  This seems to be the top dollar amount people in my numbers bracket received, some did get less.
--UofH:  Full ride and then some.  UofH is the school for which I was able to make the strongest case for why I'd consider turning down a better school.  It's also in a different bracket from my other acceptances.  I'm not sure which accounts for their financial generosity (perhaps a combination of the two).

Also thought I'd pass along some stories I got from 1Ls at Penn's admitted students weekend.  Several had a lot of luck with getting Duke to match offers from other comparable schools.  No one had any luck at all negotiating with Penn.  Just as an FYI (and completely meaningless anecdote).

I was really impressed meeting both of you guys too, made me wonder if I was getting in over my head going back to school.  I think you will both do great wherever you go.

Hardly.  You're at least as intimidating as everyone else who was there.  :)
