Law School Rankings / Re: UVA vs Northwestern...?
« on: March 06, 2006, 10:00:51 PM »
it seems to me that nu has that "corporate law" image. this might be a setback if one wants to go into public interest?

I think your answer depends a lot on where you want to practice upon graduation: nu for chicago/uva for dc, nyc

Acceptances / Re: Vandy $$$$
« on: March 06, 2006, 09:40:54 PM »
This may be a double post, my comp at work is screwing up.

I saw today that some people were getting scholarships from Vandy, ranging from $54k to $66k. My wife read my letter to me and it was for $30k need based.

Am I to assume I didn't qualify for any merit money???

 ???

30k sounds pretty great though!

Where should I go next fall? / Re: other schools national besides t14?
« on: March 06, 2006, 09:18:46 PM »
georgetown seems to create that "wow" aura for majority of laymen. They think it's second best thing to harvard..

Ex- prof(lawyer) teaching business law at my college recently moved to dc for dept. of labor job. he thought UVA was some regional state school, Georgetown okay, but not supreme.

Those are two of the absolute tip-top firms in America.  I have never placed anyone at either of them, though I have placed a few attorneys at firms in the Vault 100 (though all outside of the top 20, so for the very most elite firms, I really don't know).

I do think most of the hiring attorneys at top firms tend to have a general idea of which schools are good and which schools aren't.  I hate to say it, but at the V100 firms, they are really prestige whores.  Lots of them STILL know the USNWR rankings.  I hate it, but its true.  So, if you're really dead set on going to a firm that's at the top of the Vault 100, then yes, you should probably go to a T14.

At smaller firms... I've run into a bit of ignorance from time to time... some regional differences, even when dealing with T14 schools.  My favorite example is Georgetown.  Forget the T14.  Georgetown could fall to 20, and it would STILL be regarded as one of the best law schools in the country.  I have heard all sorts of random comments about Virginia being 'just a state school', Duke being nothing but a basketball team, Penn being confused for Penn State....  but Georgetown is always "Wow."

The big question is whether or not you will get an interview.  After that, it is all up in the air.  Literally, many hiring decisions just depend on whether or not the hiring partner or interviewing associate likes you.  Its that sleazy.  But when it comes to getting the interview....  I think that any of the schools you're looking at would keep you in the running....

Everything varries by firm to firm, partner to partner, etc.  Sometimes different offices of the same firm have entirely different athmospheres... different attitudes... etc.

Will you have an easier time getting inverviews at top firms if you have a law degree from a big name schools  Yes.  And (transitive property here) will obviously equate to giving you a better chance of getting jobs at the tops firms.

Some firms are snobby and some aren't.  I know a small (10 lawyer) NYC plaintiff-side securities fraud firm that has a roster made up entirely of T14 schools... primarily Harvard, Yale, Columbia, NYU.  Every firm has its own culture.

i need the pic to keep my motivation for working out!

Just don't post in the "trying to lose weight" thread with that pic, they will probably stone you.

at least I don't munch on cookies while staring at my computer screen for LSD while pretending to be productive at work..

I hate my desk job and my expanding waist size..  >:(

FWIW, I won't stone you.  1) You're cool, and 2) I've found that the picture is doing a damn good job at re-motivating me. :)

I <3 you lily!  :-*
