General Board / Re: SA Offer Status?
« on: August 15, 2008, 02:00:10 AM »
Got my offer on the last day and finally exhaled.  Mama will have gainful employment post-JD!!  It's one thing to know that it's likely coming, but I was still sweating a little.  Good luck, everyone!

Frier IS Tim Gunn.  The look, the voice, everything.  Well, Tim would never wear those sweaters, but maybe that's just his cover.  My 1L year, we kept waiting for him to walk in and say, "Law students make it work!"  Also, he's not a JD.  He has a PhD in Classics, and he'll still whoop your ass in Contracts.  I heart him.

Also, I hate packing.

Also, how am I already a 3L?  It goes fast, my friends.

Good luck on that drive tomorrow!  tell my roommate that I love her and I'm excited that she's finally getting out of the worst professional baseball city in the US! ;)

>:(  I rescind all previously proffered love for you and am going to tell my firm not to hire your Greek ass.

(j/k, y'all.  I heart Bouzie and don't hold him responsible for his heinous sports loyalties.)

I'm in M! No Clark or Primus, but no 8:00 class!

YAY MNOP!  Most Nights Out Partying is the section to be in.  Not to be confused with Every f-ing Gunner Here and I Just Know Little.

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Michigan 1L Taking Questions

Ditto to what Ender said.  Also, Dean Z. eats it up when someone (qualified) is genuinely gaga over Michigan.  It means you've already tasted the Kool Aid that the rest of us have permanently hooked up to our IVs.  :D  Don't try to gussy up the tone of your Why Mich essay feel free to let your whole "I'm dreaming about Michigan Law" thing hang out.

General Board / Re: What Are 1L Jobs That Pay? (Besides Firms.)
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:21:11 AM »
There are all kinds of other options as well, but it really depends on your background/interests/skills set.  For my 1L summer, I did a fellowship with a General Counsel that paid $25/hour - but it was in a field that I had about six years of pre-law school work experience and a masters degree in.

Anyway, these option are out there, but this research will be a lot easier to do once you're in school.  Talk to the senior students, network with local bar groups and other attorneys, meet with someone from OCS, read the Law Prof Blogs, think about what substantive fields you're interested in...

Also:

You can pick the money or the title; never both.

Bouzie, I love you! :D

Don't totally write off the T14 either.  Obviously every splitter's situation is different, but I got into a few of them 2 cycles ago with almost identical numbers.

General Board / Re: Why I think 2L might be more important than 1L.
« on: July 08, 2008, 10:20:01 PM »
My school is T3, not a T4 -- get ir right. And maybe I don't know how it goes as far as the search in T14 ... but half of all new BigLaw associates are gone in five years, so maybe it's better that I don't. SO ... you're saying you can be a lazy, unaccomplished boob and still make top dollar leaving a T14. If that's true, that's horrendous.

Give the emetophiliac a $35K bonus ... now!!

Who're you calling unaccomplished, kitty cat?

A lot of us are choosing $145k in secondary markets or boutique firms, but literally any of us could have the $160k if we can get through a cocktail party without vomiting on a partner.

Then it drops to $130k but no bonus

Except for the ones who are into that sort of thing.  Emetophilia to 190K!

MNC = multi-national corporate firm ...

Well, if some top schools don't do hard rankings and obscure things for the sake of selling the name brand, I guess that must be a contributing factor to the startling BigLaw attrition rate.

And another thought: The class sizes at T14s in a lot of instances are much larger than at the Paces ... my class started out at 187, and Harvard and Michigan, to name two, have classes three times that size with very little defection. So the the pool of T14s competing for BigLaw gigs seems like it would be pretty wide.

Uh, I don't mean to pee in your cornflakes when you're already getting picked on...but no way no how does Michigan have that many students per class.  Our class is maybe 2 times the 187 figure you quoted.  Also, there's a pretty sizable population that's self-selected out of biglaw.

But that's neither here nor there.  I can't speak to Harvard, obviously, but I can almost guarantee you that I was bottom third after 1L.  As goalie said, we're not ranked.  Point is, my grades were not good.  I had no problems getting NYC biglaw through OCI.

As to your larger point: absolutely, 2L is really important.  Whether it's MORE important...we may be splitting hairs.

ETA: wow, I wouldn't have been so careful to be politic and polite if I had read where you more or less call low-ranked T14 students hairy cretins.

Coming out of retirement to address this one.

I turned 30 my first semester of 1L, and am doing NYC biglaw now for my 2L summer.  My sense was that maybe, possibly my age and experience hurt a little during OCI - but I still ended up at my 1st choice firm.  More importantly, my age and experience have DEFINITELY been to my advantage this summer, and while there's the occasional weird "you're 25 and giving me assignments" moment, it's generally been an amazing experience.
