Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Why isn't American ranked higher?
« on: February 27, 2005, 02:44:31 PM »
For what its worth, I don't think American even enters the radar for large areas of the country.  Before starting to apply to LS, I had barely heard of it, had no idea where it was, and confused it with several schools with similar random geographic names (like "University of the South"). G-Mas, G-Wash, and G-town all do seem to have at least some presence nationwide.  I'm sure it is a great school, but to me it just doesn't seem to have the presence beyond its immediate region that many of its counterparts do.

another AA thread!!!!!!!! I live in a van by the river and am a compulsive liar, your prejudice and biases appall me!

Yes, I am prejudiced against people that live in vans down by rivers.  Vans down by the docks are OK.  Vans at the town square are just fine.. but I cannot tolerate vans by rivers.

Even better.. I think we should list instances of unsubstantiated "facts" on this thread.

I would like to propose that anyone presenting any item as a "fact" has to back up that "fact" with an actual, semi-reliable source (Rush Limbaugh and Michael Moore are NOT reliable sources).  I get so sick of reading garbage about schools, LSAT's, race, politics, etc. that is presented as "fact" when it is actually someone's opinion, an urban legend, or a random rumor.

As a penalty for breaking this rule, I think violators should be cursed to an eternal life of living in a van down by the river.

gravity... I get that sucker right every time (unfortunately)

Actually.. I think it has much more sinister meaning than you might realize....

"Down syndrome and its characteristics were first described by John Langdon Down in a paper entitled "Observations of an ethnic classification of idiots." It was in 1866, at a time when Charles Darwin's theory of evolution had gained quite some attention; the British scientist, Darwin had proposed the concept of natural selection as well as the concept of ancestral descent -(Encarta 2000). Down's observations on what he called "Mongolian type of idiocy" (Down 1866: 260) emphasized the disorder's source was the result of racial degeneration.
It is clear to see that this was a period when racist theories of the evolution of man were quite common. As outlined by Lane and Stratford in their book 'Current Approaches to Down's Syndrome', in 1844, theorist Robert Chambers stated the brain's stages went "from that of a fish's, to a reptile's, to a mammal's, and finally to a human's". This last category, the human's brain, also went through stages from the "Negro, Malay, American, and Mongolian nations, and finally [the] Caucasian" (1987:4). It is no doubt that this period's ignorance was due to a lack of understanding of the two main observable characteristics of the disorder: the intellectual challenge associated to it as well as the physical appearance of the individuals."

I was hoping for McCain, too.  I had that same "lesser of two evils" feeling myself last November.

I hope he runs in '08.  Please don't make me choose the Conservative Republican over the whacked out Dem again...please!  If not McCain then George Allen.  Mainly b/c my friend does the fundraising for him and it'd be kick ass to have a good friend who is in tight with the President.

This is a big flaw in our two party system.  Someone can win the most conservative 50% of the Republican party (the right-most 1/4) and the most liberal 50% of the Democrat party (the left-most 1/4) in the primaries.  That leaves us with a president that 75% of the population probably doesn't like before they even take office.

On the original topic, I lean conservative and am a Christian, but can see real merit in the argument for legalizing at least some drugs.  Maybe float a trial balloon with pot before getting to cocaine, though.

It'll never happen.  There is a stigma behind it.  BTW, politics sucks.  Used to be a big fan til the last 3 years.  f-in sucks.  John McCain should be our President.  Bush killed him in SC in 2000.  Then the Dems go and run that idiot Kerry and give me 2 evils to pick from.  Ugh.  Please 2008 bring me something good.  Drunken rant...

I think I may like Arnold and that really, really frightens me.  What does that say about me?  Yikes!
