General Board / PeaceCorp
« on: April 02, 2007, 06:12:34 PM »
I'm a 2L night student at a t3...I have decent grades (probably top 15%) I am a research assistant for the Dean, a TA for Contracts and I am on the SBA Exec Board. After I graduate (and Pass the Bar) I want to take a 2 year leave to join the Peace Corp. Ideally, I want to work in Biglaw for a few years (if possible) and if not, well...I don't know...But I have considered applying for either an LLM or a Clerkship.

My question is...would joining the Peace Corp...after law school...have a negative effect on employment after I return? Would employers think I'm indecisive and nuts for leaving to a 3rd world country for 2 years or would this reflect possitively? I know the peace corp is viewed as a positive aspect for those coming out of undergrad but I've never heard of anyone applying after law school.

Any takers?

General Board / Calif Supreme Ct v. Fed. Dist Ct

Just curious...if you had to choose between two externships which way would you go?

California Supreme Court or Federal District Court?

Regarding "prestige" and for "resume building purposes" which would you pick?

2L job search / Summer Assoc. help
« on: November 03, 2006, 07:02:30 PM »
I'm in need of some help here. I'm a part-time 2L, top 10%, and highly involved at school. I'll be externing at the Fed. Dist. Ct in the spring but I have nothing planned for the summer. I am looking toward Big Law but I didn't apply for any summer assoc positions for this summer. At my school, I'm not eligable for OCI until my 3L because I'm a part-timer. What I didn't realize is that I could have just sent out apps to big law firms myself instead of depending on OCI. I just thought that I wasn't eligable to apply to the firms to begin with but after some research I realized I could.

Here's the dilemma...I'm really late in the game. Anyone know of any Big Law firms in Los Angeles, Orange County area that would still be looking for Summer Assoc positions? I checked NALP but I'm not really sure what their deadlines mean. I'd appreciate all the help I can get. I plan on going to career services on Monday but I figured I'd see what you all have to say until then.

P.S. I go to Southwestern Law School...I'm glad to be here but from what I've seen, getting a Big Firm job is difficult from here

L.L.M. Board / LLM after a U.S. JD
« on: May 07, 2006, 07:59:10 PM »
Anyone know what a U.S. student needs to do to get into a good LLM program. I want to be a law professor and I would like to pursue an LLM in tax or contracts but I can only find info for foreign applicants. I have some time left before I actually get my JD but I'm curious to see what kind of grades (class ranking) I would need to get into a T14 school. Anyone have any experience with this...or any ideas?

Thanks in advance

General Board / LOR policy at my school
« on: March 16, 2006, 04:01:44 AM »
I heard through the grapevine that our school is adopting a new more letters of recommendation for students that aspire to transfer! I do not know if this is settled yet or if it's true to begin with but I was wondering...if the school decides to adopt this policy...what can a student do if they want to transfer? Can a school deprive students from LORs? Do they even have the right?

Anyone know if any other schools have done something similar?

Transferring / Let's beat this dead horse once more
« on: February 20, 2006, 08:05:20 PM »
Posting on here about "chances of transferring" or "advice" seems as useful as a 3rd nipple but it feels good to get some feedback from peers whether positive or negative. I received my unofficial ranking as a first year PT student and I am toying with the idea of transferring. My grades were Contracts (A), Torts (A-), LRW (B-) and Crim (B+). That gives me a 3.43 gpa and puts me in the top 20% of my class. My school only ranks in blocks of 10% so I can't tell you if I'm in the 10.1% or 20% and sadly enough, I'll never know. I want to shoot for GULC PT mainly because if I were to transfer I would only leave my school for a really good out of state school or a good regional school in California. The only top schools I know with PT programs are GULC and GW. GULC has Early Action Apps for transfer students so I was considering sending in an App for EA. Now to my real question...I know top 20% is not strong enough for GULC PT but should I apply anyway as EA with only Fall semester grades or wait until end of spring and hope to make it to top 10% and then apply? The problem with waiting until the spring is that seats get filled from all the EA apps. Any suggestions?

P.S. I attend at T3 in Cali and I do not have a compelling reason for wanting to transfer to GULC other than the fact that I'd love to live in DC and the school would open more doors for me. I ultimately want to work in academia and knowing how competitive that can be I would rather have a T1 on my resume than a T3.

General Board / Ranking
« on: January 10, 2006, 01:42:46 PM »
Can anyone give some insight on how I can tell what my class ranking would possibly be? I would look to our schools previous stats but this year my school adopted a new curve that went from a dreaded 2.3 to a much more favorable 2.9. I have a 3.3 average this semester and I'm eager to guesstimate my ranking. Anyone interested in helping me figure this out?

Studying and Exam Taking / BarBri for 1L?
« on: September 18, 2005, 02:58:21 PM »
Anyone use BarBri for 1L study? I keep seeing this guy in my 1L class with this huge green BarBri book (while working on his case briefs) and I can't help but wonder what the hell he's doing with it. Next time I see him I'll ask him but I figure I can ask LSDers as well.

Southwestern / Who's Attending Southwestern?

I got off the waitlist about a week ago and I'll be starting the evening program this August. Anyone else attending?

Where should I go next fall? / Southwestern or Chapman?
« on: August 10, 2005, 04:43:58 AM »
I'm stuck betweem Southwestern (PT) or Chapman (FT). I don't mind going PT so I can work a little and try to pay my way. I am hoping to get a job at Skadden, Arps, Slate... through an Associate friend of mine so I might be able to make some useful contacts. I would also prefer to stay in LA for work. Chapman would not allow me to work but at least I can finish in 3 years and I really like the area and campus. I like the fact that it's associated with a university and is across the street from the undergrad campus. Going to Chapman will also allow me to apply to the JD/MBA program that SW does not offer.

What to do?
