Black Law Student Discussion Board / Re: The Hair Thread
« on: July 18, 2006, 08:55:26 PM »
I don't think those of us with perms, those of us that are in between, and those of us that are natural have anything to worry about.  Of course, we are worried about perception, but there are some black people with natural hair that are Republicans with white spouses.  There are others that are permed out that are the exact opposite.  You can't judge a book by its cover.  The only black associate at the firm I am workin at has braids.  The only black female partner is dark as a Hershey bar.  Do you -- and if the firm you are looking at has a problem with your hair, complexion, or anything else, you didn't want to work in their funky office anyway.

It's all about YOU -- not them!  Remember that and everything else will fall into place.

I prefer to study at home.  That way, my dinner/bathroom/mental health breaks don't get too out of control.  Bathroom breaks in the law library always included some sort of distraction or running my mouth.  It's just easier for me to go home, get settled, turn the tv to the smooth jazz channel, and bang out some reading.

Plus, a lot of people like to put in a lot of face time at the library so that everybody else thinks they are studying (or to say "I spent 12 hours in the library yesterday") and they aren't doin nuthin for real anyway. Law school is all about mind games...you will notice that when you get there. :P

But, again, it depends on you.  My bf cannot study at home.  I can.  Just a matter of your own style....

Hey ya'll!

I used one note a lot 1st semester.  The best thing is the search feature.  But one note prints weird so I stopped using it as my bread and butter and mostly put stuff in one note that was random and didn't have a place in my outline.  I didn't find it as helpful 2nd semester just because the course load was heavier and I didn't have time to transfer info from one note to word.

I basically started outlines from day 1 2nd semester.  I mostly typed all of my notes into my outlines, and then when it came down to crunch time, I cut all of my outlines down to the bare bones info that I needed.  For classes like Torts and Crim law, I made outlines, but I studied from big charts with all the elements. They say don't memorize, but you have to memorize the elements and the charts were the best for me.

I couldn't live without my laptop!!  Just make sure you uninstall AIM, Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger and the Sims 2 before classes start!!  Lead us not into temptation.  ;)

The CDs are always floating around.  I wouldn't buy them if I were you.  It's probably illegal but get them from someone else. :P

I can't add/subtract/multiply or divide at all and did fine in property.  Just figure out how to make things make sense for yourself, no matter how weird it may seem to another person or no matter how long it takes.  There is no one way to do anything.

Oh - and don't form study groups first week of class.  Bad idea.

She was on tv...  I haven't tried to jump inside the tv since I was a lil girl watching He-Man and The Smurfs.  I learned real quick that you can't actually get in there... :D

ooohhhh, i misread. i thought you said YOUR younger sister...

LOL!!  Oh - both of her legs would be broken.  I do have a lil cousin (from the same tatoo family mentioned above) whose mother thinks it is SO cute that she already has a "cute lil shape" and she dances like she is trying to make some change.  They are a HOT MESS.  She is such a smart lil girl too...so I encourage her to do other things...but it is damn near impossible for me to make a difference when her 24/7 influence is focused on the wrong stuff.

I missed that memo....last time I checked Howard was definitely an HBCU.  It's named after a white guy though...

This is an interesting article.  I bet you would never see a 7 yr old asian girl popping her coochie in a music video.  I fell off the couch the other day when I saw a young sister already learning that her a$$ can earn her a paycheck quicker than a book.  I don't know what video it was...but it was truly depressing...

Edited to clarify that I saw this scene that made my eyes bleed during the only 30 seconds that I have watched BET in years.  A sad reminder to NEVER turn to that channel again.
