this is exactly the case. the money they are giving us is a combination of merit and need. Unfortunately, there shall be no more $$$ after the initial notification, unless you don't negotiate for more, of course.
I was thinking about the Duke thing...Could the letter that we've been getting be a combination of merit and need based aid? They did have all of us fill out the scholarship form with the financial info at the beginning. I hope not, but just a thought.
Bumping this puppy. Do you know this for a fact, and if so, how?

Got rejected at Harvard yesterday/today. They sent the letter to my old address, so my housemate broke the news to me over e-mail - much better than having to physically open that filthy letter myself.

I, too, got Little Rock, Ark.; I think this site is bankrolled by the Arkansas Tourism Board.

Ack nevermind, just got a response from financial aid and everything is resolved!
I should be receiving my financial aid very soon apparently.

Ack! According to USC's OASIS website, my FAFSA is "missing."
I filed that thing on 01/01! I'm freaking out that none of the first six schools I listed on my initial FAFSA have received it. I've fired off e-mails to all of the schools asking if they have received it or not, but haven't heard a peep back yet.

Just got the letter this morning.
They say they'll review all applicants in June. I have to decide whether or not I want to stay on this. Columbia would be a top choice, but I really wanted to have a decision made by May.
This one hurts.

danrather - what was your scholarship called? i didnt know temple had a 10K scholarship. Tina, do you know if youre scholarship would still be 7500/year if you were classified as in state? i got the same money from Temple and am wondering.
It's called the "Law Faculty Scholarship." Oh, and I am in-state as well.

Wow congrats! You want to do public interest, right? You'd be crazy not to take the $$$ at Columbia. I have a hard time seeing how the slight "prestige" and academic differences between Columbia & Stanford/Harvard is enough to merit not taking a full-ride at Columbia, especially when you plan on doing PI work. The debt burden is what cripples so many public interest laywers, and you now have an amazing opportunity to attend one of the finest law schools in the world without having to worry about debt. I am rabidly jealous.

I'd take the fellowship at Columbia in a heartbeat. The prestige difference isn't enough, in my mind, to make up for the freedom that the lack of debt from Columbia allows.
Either way you can't really go wrong, so congrats!
