Hi all :)

Ever since being accepted into the school I knew I wanted to go to, I have been having a hard time getting to sleep (i.e., fifteen minutes instead of three).  I'm not a fretful person in general, which is why this new worrying streak is so strange.

I've been dating this great guy for almost three years now, and I'm pretty sure he's it.  And I can really picture myself having kids with him down the line (maybe when I'm 30 - I'm 22 now).  And I know that the moment I have those kids, I'm going to be a different person, and I'm not going to be able to work 60+ hours a week including weekends.

That said: I'm going to HLS (unless something really weird happens), and given that my boyfriend's English, I want to work in the UK for a good international firm.  Essentially, I want to earn as much money as I can--not for myself, but for my future family.  I want to be able to buy a nice house, good food, a safe car, and send my kids to good schools and give them everything my parents gave me.  Plus, I'm just plain excited about going into the corporate world.  At least for five-ten years.  I've never worked hard, not including at school (odd jobs here and there, nothing more than 8-10 hours per week), and I like the idea of finally earning my way.

I suppose my questions are these: Is anyone else worrying about this, male or female?  What are my options?  Is it possible to find a firm that is friendly toward employees who might one day want more flexible hours?  Am I simply freaking out because everyone talks about 60+ hours per week, and I'm picturing a life in which I never, ever get to see my family?

General Off-Topic Board / From regular to lurker
« on: March 04, 2005, 05:30:49 PM »
This is so strange - I've almost completely stopped posting, but visit the board just as frequently to read other posts.  I've gone from being a regular poster to a lurker - isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

I miss posting...the problem is, I've kind of started to regard this site as a television show.  And it feels weird interacting with it.

Off to play PS2.  TV you can interact with.

Incoming 1Ls / Fafsa confirmation, anyone?
« on: February 21, 2005, 02:36:14 PM »
Hi all :) I filed my Fafsa thing a while ago (maybe a 1.5 months), and haven't heard anything.  Is that normal? I thought I was supposed to receive some sort of confirmation in 4-6 weeks...starting to get a little worried.  God this stuff is confusing.

Incoming 1Ls / Harvard Email Accounts
« on: February 09, 2005, 10:54:58 AM »
Sorry I've been absent for a while!  But I just wanted to drop in and say, for all those people (including me) who have been fretting about a lack of info from Harvard, I just got an email telling me about my HLS email account, to which the law school will send relevant information.

So check your email :)

And I booked myself at a bed and breakfast (yay!).  March 17th-23rd. And I suck at making arrangements, so if anyone wants to arrange a get-together for LSDers who want to go to Harvard, or are going, or are in the Boston it and tell me about it so I can be there.  :)

General Off-Topic Board / Prague!
« on: January 25, 2005, 03:15:59 PM »

I'm going!  My bf and I just booked flight/board for April, and I'm thrilled.  Has anyone been?  Have any ideas for places to go/things to see?

The cathedral and the castle are the two big ones, but any restaurant suggestions or clubs/concert venues would be great.

Law School Admissions / Columbia Dean of Admissions
« on: January 25, 2005, 12:24:01 PM »

He passed away recently (I bumped into a Columbia student earning his LLM at LSE today, and he mentioned it, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed because the website didn't post it prominently).

I certainly don't mean to be crass, but just wanted to bring it to everyone's attention, in case this event had any effect on the relative lateness of Columbia letters.  It probably didn't, but you never know.   Also, not sure if this is the right place to post this thread!

General Off-Topic Board / An intellectual crush
« on: January 24, 2005, 09:54:43 AM »
I have this problem - I develop intellectual crushes on professors (actually this is only my second).  And it came from an unexpected source: there is a young, female professor who teaches at the LSE.  I've taken two classes from her, and she's amazing: sweet, smart, helpful, just a wonderful woman.  I met with her today and we just talked about the time she's spent in Africa - she seemed so happy as she spoke about the experience of just walking from village to village.  And she's an expert on Kant, despite the fact that she can't be more than ... 30?  Maybe 35?

Other intellectual crushes out there?

Incoming 1Ls / Harvard Admit Weekend
« on: January 20, 2005, 12:31:49 AM »
I know there's another post on potential Harvard 1Ls, but I just booked a flight to go out to Cambridge between the 16th and 24th of March, because one of the admit weekends is on the 20th and 21st, I think.  Just wanted to put that out there, in case others were going to be going to the various things they have planned on those dates :)

I'm heading to Cambridge in the spring, and had forgotten how darn expensive hotels are there.  I just don't feel like spending lots of $ checking out a law school, and I don't have my parents' budget, so I'm totally unfamiliar with the budget hotels.  I have friends I would stay with, but all of their theses are due around the days I'm going, and I am NOT going to inflict myself on them during that stressful time.  I've written to Harvard to ask for advice - do you think there's any chance there'll be some spare student accommodation?  Have any of you all been through this with other schools?

thanks :)
