The Fulani have not always been muslim, they are the group that introduced islam to Nigeria since they were nomadic traders/herders. Have the fulani always been muslim of course not because Islam was introduced in the 13th century, and the empire of Kanem controlled the area from the end of the 11th century to the 14th, therefore the Fulani were not always muslims. That is the two major ethnic groups in that area Hausa-Fulani, yes they are distinguished as two groups, but even nigeria.gov lists them as the way I listed them... "With an estimated population of some 4.3 million people, Bauchi is divided into 20 local government areas. Predominant ethnic groups are the Hausa-Fulani, who constitute some 65 percent of the population, as well as the kanuri, Gerawa, Sayawa, Jarawa, Volawa and Karekare. The state derives its name from its capital city, which in turn looks back to a famous hunter called Bauhe. The area is indeed famous for its wildlife and for those who pursue it."
