Where should I go next fall? / Re: Chicago Financial Aid-

Got the same letter several weeks ago, and so the cost of attendance is near $60k.  Unless they give me some more positive news at admitted students' weekend, it's going to be hard to turn down paying 1/3 as much at UVa or GW.

Rocky makes my point much better and more succintly than I could have. I realized when writing my response that you would quite probably take the "does [insert belief about worship of some inanimate object here] merit respect?" approach in an attempt to shoot a hole in my logic.  We're not dealing purely in theory here, though--we're dealing in the real world.  And in the real world, any mature individual that doesn't agree with another's particular beliefs (or even finds them ridiculous) has enough forebearance to not actively, tastelessly mock them--unprovoked.

Sorry to allow the tangent. As far as your decision, if you're looking to stay in SLC I really don't think you can go wrong with the Y.  You'll get a great education--and an amazing one for the money.  No need to have a degree from a top 10 to land one of the better jobs in SLC.  If I were planning to practice here, that's what I would do.  Just my $.02.

Oh my god, you're right. I'll try to treat silly religious practices with the stone-faced solemnity they're automatically due because a handful of people got conned into believing them from now on.

So are you a Mormon? The BYU application, apparent Utah residency, and kneejerk sensitivity to comments about holy undergarments would all suggest so, but I could be wrong.

People's religious beliefs are something that inherently merit respect and at least a shred of deference.  Educated individuals overwhelming realize this.  Such belittling sentiment as yours is familiar to us all--but it typically comes only from the unenlightened and childish.

In answer to your questions, I'm from Virginia originally and am LDS. With regards to my "kneejerk reaction", anything considered "holy" by a group of contributing members of society is something they will naturally flock to defend--moreso than perhaps anything else. Thus the Holy Qur'an, Holy Catholic Church, and Holy Bible all receive such respect from me--and most others--even though I am not an adherent of the first two.

Does the BYU scholarship come with free "Longjohns of the Lord"(TM) full-length Mormon underwear? Because if it does, especially if it's got the BYU logo on it, I don't know how you could turn them down. Those sacred skivvies have turned away bullets, you know. Well, if you believe the mormons.....

Your lack of respect combined with deplorable ignorance would be unbelievable to me if I hadn't already seen it so prevalently in the past.

Really? I've been around ... And the pic is Shakira ;D

Yeah, I haven't been around :) A buddy at work's wife is buds with Shakira. Too bad I can't work that.

Haven't "seen" you in awhile, mc. Holy mad iconness.  Via e-mail, eh?  Hmmm...

Hey guys, see stats below.  Chicago wrote me today to tell me I don't qualify for any financial aid scholarship money (prob b/c of the stupid NeedAccess requiring parental info--LAME).  Anyway, Duke has offered me the $25k over the first five semesters and is in a cheaper place to live and GW is a top IP school and has offered $15k/year.  Any advice as to how to go about telling Chicago this in a clear but tactful way to see if they can offer any financial aid to me at all?  E-mail is probably out, but I'd prefer that actually if it were acceptable.  Otherwise, I assume I'm calling.  Let me know what you've done or what I should do... thanks in advance.
