Choosing the Right Law School / Seattle v. Gonzaga ($) v. Dayton ($$)
« on: February 28, 2011, 04:30:06 PM »
I'm posting this one on behalf of a friend and wanted to pass on any input you all have on to her.

Admitted to Seattle U (no money), Gonzaga w/ $7,500 a year, and Dayton w/ $16,000 a year.

Gonzaga scholarship is based on keeping a 2.75 GPA w/ a 2.86 1L median. Dayton requires her  :-Xto stay in the top 40%.

Wildcard is that she really is not sure how she wants to use her JD. Former active duty Army Military Intelligence officer, now reserve and working as an intel contractor. Primary goal is to return to the Army as a JAG, but may have an injury that will result in that not being possible. Secondary goals are all non-BigLaw oriented but BigFedGovt is on the radar along with state/local govt as a DA. May also pursue in-house work with intel contractors.

Significant cash savings will allow her to pay for almost all of her JD out of pocket but is a bit risk adverse to spending her entire savings on a law degree. No connection to the Dayton or Ohio area, just somewhere she got in with a lot of money. Regionally wants to end up either in Alaska or Washington State.

Thanks in advance LSDers.

Current Law Students / Bar/Bri MPQ-2 Full Day MBE
« on: July 23, 2008, 04:53:00 PM »
Has anyone else done this yet? I took it today and somehow dropped 3 points from my Bar/Bri practice MBE a few weeks ago. 126 to 123. What the @#!*? I've been putting foot to ass with studying and I get dumber?

Whatever shred of confidence I had about covering my essay bases with a higher MBE is now totally gone.

Is the flooding affecting the law school at all?

This article makes it sound like the campus may be in for some real trouble:

Bit a of long shot but do any of you USD students have any previous exams from Professor Solum?

He just left USD last year so I thought some may be floating around.

Feel free to reply or PM me if you have anything.

Thanks in advance,

Current Law Students / Loan Repayment Breakdown
« on: November 15, 2006, 06:46:58 PM »
This might be a basic question but my liberal arts education has left me fiscal moron so I'll ask it anyway.

I'm trying to figure out, ballpark, what my monthly repayment for LS loans will be. If I was dealing with about *K in debt, with the usual combination of subsidized/unsubsidized/private (we'll figure like 7.5% interest), can anyone throw out some numbers for me?

Also, I'm throwing around JAG for a career option. I'd be banking about 38K of taxable income and another 20 or so untaxed (BAH, etc). Throw in cheaper groceries, free medical/dental, etc.
Is there a general figure as to what this 58K translates to in "real world" money?
As I wrestle with the BigLaw v. JAG question, I'm trying to figure out if the 135K taxed at like 34% (maybe more?) is all that much better when you figure JAG's tax exemption, health care perks, lower overall cost of living, etc.

Thanks in advance,
