If you have a chance while you are near Sydney, you might want to check out the Blue Mountains. My trip there was awesome - went hiking, saw gorgeous waterfalls, tried rapelling (they call it abseiling). The name comes from the blue tinge of the sky (you really can see it!) resulting from the eucalyptus trees in the valleys of the mountains.

Also, if you are interested in wine at all, check out one of Australia's many wine regions - they are scattered about the country, but near Sydney is the Hunter Valley. You can do wine tasting, get a tour to see how it is made, and the areas are really beautiful just to look at. Also, my drive was full of wild kangaroos! (It is an easy day trip from the city, as are the Blue Mountains, though they are a little further.)

Also, if you find that you are short on time while there or suddenly decide that you want to stay longer at one place than you expected, I would recommend that Canberra be the first place to skip. I know it is the capital, but there is very little there and it is a good hike from Sydney. There were a couple neat museums, however, and the drive past all the embassies was exciting (all of the different buildings are designed in the typical architecture and style of their respective countries).

While in Cairns, another place I would recommend is the Kuranda rainforest. You can take this scenic railcar through the area, go on the skyrail over the canopy, and hike guided or alone. Also nearby is Tjapukai, this Aboriginal park where you can see dance performances, practice and learn to throw a boomerang, try spear-throwing, etc. It was a pretty fun place.

I know that's a lot of stuff to throw out there, but I figured more is probably better. I'm so excited for you. I spent six months in Sydney and did a little travelling around the rest of the country as well - it was amazing!

I am going to Villanova and I have been looking around the area and online at apartments. It took me some time to come up with a list of (seemingly) nice, close, reasonably priced apartments that have W/D in unit (really important to me), so I thought I would post some of the places I came up with for any others who are looking:

Where should I go next fall? / Re: "The decision is in the mail"
« on: May 24, 2005, 10:32:28 PM »
It may very well vary from one school to the next, but when I called Temple to check on my application (sent Jan. 14th) a few weeks ago the receptionist told me it was "in the mail." I was rejected a week later, unfortunately.

Of course, they may just say that to get applicants off their backs regardless. Best of luck!

Villanova...so excited (I just got my acceptance last night)!

Update: Yes, the decision was a rejection - received today (in an envelope that had never been sealed). Kinda surprised bc I thought I'd likely get waitlisted. Eh...

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Villanova or Brooklyn??

Redrover: Is your Villanova observation based on the activity that has recently been posted on LSN and a little bit around LSD? Or your friends and people you know from home, etc?

Just asking because I am still holding out hope that there are more than waitlists/rejections being distributed from Villanova. It seems like they have moved much more slowly than many schools throughout the process. I am also hoping that LSN is a sample of the higher end of the applicant pool.

Hey I feel the same way...I've been waiting on Villanova for months now too with no reply. I finally called yesterday and they told me the same thing...I'm still in committee. I guess that's something because it means they are considering us and not just tossing us aside. No comfort, though, because they are so close to where I live as well and I'd really love a decision!!

Law School Applications / Called Temple - Decision just went out?
« on: May 05, 2005, 12:41:44 PM »
I finally caved today and called Temple's admission office to inquire about the status of my application since it has been more than 13 weeks since my file went complete and they gave an 8-12 week timeline. The woman on the phone told me that my decision "just went out so I should be receiving it any day." Does this mean no acceptance? I assume if the decision was an acceptance she would have/could have told me over the phone, right? Anyone called and had acceptance confirmed via telephone?

Acceptances / Re: In at Villanova
« on: April 05, 2005, 12:55:55 PM »
Dividedsky: Given that you received your acceptance so close to the April 1st deposit deadline, did the letter give you a different deadline for receipt of your deposit (like 2 weeks after receipt of acceptance or something)?

Acceptances / Re: Strange Catholic Mix-up

Do all students receive a second letter with someone else's name on it? That is an unusual policy, indeed.
You're fun.  :D
