Financial Aid / FAFSA Question
« on: April 17, 2008, 06:34:15 PM »
Okay I realize it is way past the deadline for all schools but I applied late in the cycle and am just now hearing back. Here's my situation, I didn't file a FAFSA because I didn't actually know if I would be an undergrad this fall. I'm getting married in June and so after talking to the financial aid office at my undergrad school I decided it would be better for me to wait until I get married and file then because my mom's income would no longer count. Come to find out I am graduating (an issue with some classes I needed to take and will hopefully be attending law school in the fall.) Now after reading some of these posts I think I would be considered independent anyway as I am 23, will be 24 this year. So I guess I could go and fill it our right now and it would only be my income, not my moms and not my future husband's. The issue with that is that I haven't worked at all for the past year. I have no W2s, I have been living at home. Yes, I know, slacker, but I was taking advantage of my mom telling me my job was school. So can I really file a FAFSA as an independent if I'm not filing taxes and have had no income? I have filed taxes in the past, this past year is an exception. I am so confused!

I'm getting married in June and if all goes well SO and I will be moving from the east coast to the west coast. If it doesn't go well we'll be moving from east coast to Florida as I am in at St. Thomas. Actually...I might not go there and re-apply to Cal Western and Whittier for spring admission and/or part time if I don't get in for this fall. It's basically a big mess however we are both graduating in May and so he doesn't have any jobs tying him down here, it's not like he's been working someplace for X years.

In at St. Thomas with a scholarship. Deposit due May 7th, hoping to hear from some other schools before then. Holding out for a San Diego area one....

Congrats on St. Thomas and the $$$!  I am actually gonna call them tomorrow and negotiate the terms of the scholarship they offered me...

Thanks for the nice words all! Good luck on the negotiating at St. Thomas Happy!

In at Creighton, Gonzaga, Tulsa, Franklin Pierce, Dayton.  Location isn't really a concern...where should I go?

Where would you rather live and practice?
As far as where to go to school I have to agree with the other posters, you should go where you want to live and practice. That is my issue, I don't want to live in Miami, I will if I have to but my goal is to get to California. If I get my degree in Florida it will be hard to take it to California. So even though St. Thomas $$$ is attractive, the location is not. Did you get any $$$ at any of the schools? If you really don't care where you go then maybe you should consider going to the least expensive one.

Has anyone visited St. Thomas? I can't possibly get down there and I was just wondering what other people think of the school and campus who have been there. Thank you!

Where should I go next fall? / LOCI
« on: April 13, 2008, 03:55:42 PM »
I was wondering who to address a LOCI to, it doesn't seem right to just put "to whom it may concern." I would really appreciate any help with this, thank you!

Wait List / Re: thomas jefferson law waitlist

You can add me to the TJ waitlist

Waitlisted deferred at Thomas Jefferson. Still waiting on a ton of others. I totally understand the deferring thing since I applied so late but the continued waiting is killing me!

in- Cal Western
out- UALR

Congrats on Cal Western, I'm hoping and praying I get in as well.

Thanks!  I LOVE san diego but without some $$$ I don't think I will be making the move.  Based on LSN data I don't think Cal Western will be giving little ol' me much money...  90K+ is just too much investment considering their rank and job placement record...

Good luck to you on getting in, I am calling them on Monday to inquire about $$$ and if no go then I will withdraw.

Well good luck with that, I hope you get the money! My numbers make it a reach, poor undergrad leaves me with 2.63/153 so I will be surprised if I get in. I'm getting married in June and my fiance's family lives in the area, plus his uncle is a grad from there so it would be nice to be accepted. *Fingers crossed*
