General Off-Topic Board / I HOPE Racism will fade away if I do my part
« on: March 20, 2008, 10:04:37 AM »
I come from an all white family.  My grandparents are far less racist than their parents were, my parents have some struggles with race, but they try hard not to discriminate.  My siblings and I aren't really racist at all, but we do notice race and racial tension. I believe that my children will not be racist at all.  Skin color will become more like hair color, and people won't make any race based judgements.
It seems (based on the media) that many black churches don't want to let their patrons let go of racism.  I don't think we should forget about slavery or the horrible persecution that my ancestors brought upon the slaves.  I don't think we should forget about the sacrifices of those great individuals that brought change to America.  However, we shouldn't assume that our children will be racist.

"Dear Law School X:

Each year, many law schools compete for students like me, and unfortunately students like me can not accommodate all the qualified candidates.  I am still very interested in your offer of acceptance, so I have placed you on my Waitlist.  My waitlist is not ranked, so unfortunately I can't tell you what your likelihood of coming off the waitlist is.  If another Law school that is more qualified than you rejects me, you will move one step closer to acceptance!
Thank you for your interest in me.

It's not so fun when it happens to you."

A lot of people seem to be missing the point about the gun control debate.
First, I don't buy guns to defend my house from criminals I buy guns because I love to hunt, and I love to shoot guns.  I'm a good guy. Don't take away my recreation, please!
Second, enforcement should be the key issue.  Drugs are illegal, and because they are illegal BAD people sell them. If Guns are Illegal BAD people will sell them. Honestly, would a law abiding citizen really go buy a gun in a back alley from a gang member if they can just go down to a sporting goods store?
Make guns illegal and it will create a huge black market for weapons.  Gun dealers will go from retail store employees with background checks, to rapists and murders who throw in a case of hollow-point shells when you buy a piece from the trunk of their 1985 cadillac.

Sorry, I can't really help you with any of that.  I've done a lot of research about the area and the lifestyle, but I don't really know that much about what you're looking for.

I do know that most people think that there are at least 4 better schools in Ohio.

Incoming 1Ls / Should I be a litigator?
« on: March 19, 2008, 02:07:00 PM »
I have talked to a lot of attorneys that specialize in litigation and criminal law, and I'm very interested in that type of career.  I have a few 3L friends in law school that think I would really enjoy an emphasis in Trial Advocacy/Litigation.
I'll be attending a school ranked between 40 and 65
I'll graduate with just-below-average debt.
Let's assume I can graduate in the top 20% of my class (Maybe I can't, but humor me.)

What are some pros and cons of emphasizing in trial advocacy or criminal law?
How can I learn about whether or not I'm cut out for the job, or if there will be a lot of opportunity for me?

Law School Admissions / Re: REJECTED, ETC. TODAY
« on: March 18, 2008, 04:40:37 PM »
I just checked the BYU status checker and it says "Decision Rendered"  they said they sent the decision today.

Brutal, why don't they just tell me I'm rejected and get it over with.  It's going to be a long walk to the mailbox the next couple of days.

Do you know of any books that can help you decide what type of law you want to practice?

Law School Admissions / Re: Why haven't they answered yet?

They are kind of a reach school for me.  If I'm an auto-reject I hope they will let me know soon.

Law School Admissions / Why haven't they answered yet?
« on: March 18, 2008, 03:42:45 PM »
It says on a school's website that they review files in the order they are completed.  On LSN, people who have gone complete after me have been accepted, rejected, and waitlisted.   The school in question is in my home state.

Any insight into their methods?

I got a message that said my financial aid application was incomplete and I could check the status online after I was fully admitted.  Would this be a good reason to call them?

Law School Admissions / Re: Multiple Seat Deposits?
« on: March 18, 2008, 01:27:03 PM »
Regardless of the ethics, I think we can all agree that this whole process is really frustrating.  I have to put a seat deposit down on a great school 1000 miles away because the schools in the market I want to work in are dragging their feet.  I went complete in december.  I see no reason for these schools to take so long, especially if I'm an auto-reject.
