Law School Applications / Sounds like no more acceptances from Iowa
« on: March 20, 2008, 08:40:15 PM »
For anyone like me that was in the "hold decision category" at Iowa, I just got waitlisted today. They told me they are overenrolled and basically it sounds like everyone in the hold is getting WL or dinged. There are already 300 people on the waiting list as well. Bummer.

well, i emailed them and they said that they had a major computer error yesterday. They were nice enough to attach a fee waiver when I requested in the email. I just decided I'm not going to apply though because I would feel bad for the guy in this threat waiting to get in off deferral.

i was wondering the same thing. the email they sent kind of bugged me because it was addressed to the wrong person. To make matters worse, it's not even a common name. Nor is it anywhere near my name in the alphabet.

"Dear Noele Aabye De Hernandez,"

Yeah, that's not me.  ???

Wow.....weird, Same thing happened to me, exact same name was used as well. I was like seriously its half arabian and half mexican. Anyway, I replied in email so I'll report back on what they say.

Personally I don't think that work experience is really at all valuable to a lawyer's future success. In many cases I think it just shows adcomms that you're responsible. As soon as you graduate you start getting work experience so I don't think it really matters for future success since you're going to get it anyway.

So you don't think it's valuable to learn to manage employees, network with contacts and sell your services?  Most lawyers that I've talked to say that Law School doesn't do very much to prepare them for the actual job, so do you think law school is unnecessary too?  I mean, you're going to learn it on the job anyway?

I actually do think law school is close to unnecessary. It doesn't really do that much to prepare you for the job and it actually developed more as a way to regulate who could and couldn't practice law. Sort of like what doctors did to regulate their profession and keep midwives out.

Law School Applications / Re: Iowa Hold Catagory

I wonder how much of an advantage in-state residency gives you on the hold list...

I'm assuming its probably the same advantage it confers on in-staters just in general. Its pretty well known that being from Iowa gives you a huge advantage in getting in to Iowa period. I'm guessing its probably just like that.

Law School Applications / Re: Asking for MORE MONEY $$$

Do you have any scholarships from higher ranked schools you could mention to them too so they think maybe you'll go to the other school unless they step up with some more money?

I think stuff of that nature is always worth a try. Just be sure and make it clear that you're really grateful for their offer, but that the difference in cost is making it really difficult for you to make a choice and that if they could make it little bit more affordable it might swing the choice in their direction. however, some schools just don't deal period. I tried to get a school to make me a better offer based on a higher ranking school offering me 15,000 more and they refused to do anything.
