Law School Admissions / Re: Still Waiting on UChicago?
« on: March 20, 2008, 12:55:38 PM »
I just got the notification that my file is on hold and that I have until the 28th of this month to add to my file. Anybody have any idea when decisions will be made on files like mine? I was happy to get placed on hold after getting rejected by boalt already. What do you think the chances are of peopple on hold?

I talked to a career service person at "unnamed" school who has a nephew going to Hastings right now. He is a 1L. For the past months he has been calling her asking for help in finding a summer job because he can't walk in to the career service office at Hastings and he had to set an appointment for weeks out. They have a class of like 400 from  what I understand so it just makes it incredibly difficult to get any personalized help. He even sent her his resume so she could help him out.

The Bay Area is just so saturated that even though there are so many places one could find summer employment it is very difficult for many reasons. Plus depending on where you are going to live while going to Hastings the commute on bart would be no fun either.

I leave for pepperdine tomorrow so I will let you know what I think about them later in the week. Tough decision though.

Incoming 1Ls / Re: Emory Class of 2011

I am startin to get excited about Emory also. I haven't completely decided but I am getting close to. The scholarship is just impossible to turn down.

Tell me more about Atlanta. I have never been out there, but I am looking forward to it.

I'm also tryin to decide if pepperdine will be worth it. I have a full ride there and I'm still not sure. I definitley would love to live there and I know the school will be good, but the job opportunities on the way out make me nervous enough to think about it a couple times before committing to them and I have a full scholarship. I don't know how kids will go there paying full tuition. Crazy! No offense to anybody that is.

What are the requirements to keep the scholarship?
Pepperdine does a great job mentoring its top students--and the top 15% get a lot of fancy jobs--but if the scholarship is hard to keep and/or you're in at a t14 school, it might not be worth it.

I just have to stay in "good standing" Which I assume means not to get all C's and a D, or something similar

I agree. The debt isn't worth it. Especially if you want to end up in Georgia anyway.

The T14 is a joke. Who came up with "14" anyway. It is stupid and idiotic. The only schools that matter are Harvard, Stanford and Yale...maybe Georgetown. Other than that everyone on the "outside" thinks every school is good. People don't understand or even care about the "T14" "Top 25" or any other T something or other. Just the schools themselves and the retarded students who care so much about rankings.

Thanks for all the ideas/input. COL is a major factor in the decision. Santa Clara and Pepperdine would be similar and then there is Provo which compared to California is obviously ridiculously inexpensive. Since I wanna end up in Cali I am leaning to Santa Clara/Pepperdine but I think from BYU I would be able to make it back to California.

I will be going down next week to visit campus and I am excited for that. I have actually been there before but never as a tour of the entire campus nor the law school. The major question I have is about employment summers/upon graduating. Where have some of your classmates worked? About how many students get OCI's? Do you know of any students who have gone on to work in northern california? How has the career services offices helped you to find employment? Thanks for answering.

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Santa Clara vs Pepperdine vs BYU
« on: March 07, 2008, 01:22:56 PM »
I will basically be able to go to all of these schools for free. I just have to decide what school would be the best for career prospects. I want to eventually end up in Cali. I have family near all of these schools and I wouldn't mind living in any of their locations.

Tell me what you know about how hard it is to be in the top 20% of any of these schools.

Tell me about the professors and the students at these schools.

Tell me how much students study at these schools.

Tell me where you would go.

Keep in mind they are all free so price doesn't matter except for the fact that california has a much higher cost of living compared to Utah. Thanks for all the input.
