Choosing the Right Law School / Re: asking for money from a school?
« on: April 23, 2008, 05:27:18 AM »
I was awarded a small scholarship to one school, but wanted more of course :) So I wrote the admissions office an email along the lines of "I was wondering if the initial scholarship offer is usually the final offer or if there is a chance more scholarship money will be distributed after deposits are in, etc"  The Dean wrote me back and extended my deposit deadline 2 weeks to give me time to see if i'd be offered more money! Needless to say, I didnt get more money... but I thought it was an easy way to ask, without being rude in any way.

Deciding between Carlisle and Houston... most likely... but I havent been admitted to Houston yet... so there is a large possibility of Penn State :)

I heard the same about SMU decisions being out by April 30th. I wanted to take a tour this month and they said they are not giving any personal tours until after April 30th b/c their admissions staff is working their a*ses off until then...

I got my Master's in Legal Studies so I should be a master at legal writing :) Its all about style & format... Topic sentences, reiterating points, conclusions, organization of ideas and arguments.  There are numerous books out there about what to include in each paragraph and how to organize briefs/memos... its just about following directions...

in my opinion anyways...

I'm visiting SMU on Thursday, the 24th.  Anything in particular I should tour/visit while there?  Admissions office apparently isnt doing tours until after April 30so when they have decisions out. Thanks.

Are you asking about SMU or Dallas in general?

The reason why there are no tours is that finals start on April 28th and end on May 9th and then graduation is May 17th. There are no students to conduct tours and they don't want to interrupt studying/exam taking.

I'm touring the SMU campus "self guided".  Thats why I was wondering if there is anything I should make sure to see while there.  I am from a town about 30 minutes from dallas, so I'm semi-familiar with the area, just not the law school. Just wondering if there was anything unique about SMU I should be sure to see while visiting, since I wont be with an admissions guide to ask...

I am visiting UH, SMU, and Baylor all within the next week.  I was told to look at Montrose, Midtown, Galleria, Upper Kirby, Medical City, Westheimer locations... there is another thread somewhere on here with a lot fo details about Houston living...

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Re: Anyone heading to Baylor?

I'm in a similar situation, only I got accepted to Baylor's spring class so I dont have to make up my mind right away. Waiting on Houston though. If you see my thread about Interesting about Texas schools... I emailed a ton of people, and just included a few on there.  I just had a paralegal of 20 years for a big firm email me and said #1 Baylor, #2 SMU, #3 Houston - I was suprised by that.  Waco very small, 1.5 hours from big cities, practical experience...$28k/yr w/o schcolarships,  Houston in HUGE city, much larger class size, $17k w/o scholarships. Depends on the atmosphere you like, the prgrams you like... if you want to be a trial lawyer? Thats what I've been told so far anyways. I'm visiting both this weekend.

Thats why I posted the emails, because I was suprised by what he said also.  That being said, without giving away his information, he is an attorney involved in the hiring process at a law firm in Texas that has over 700 attorneys.  Thats stats are straight from the firm...

Yes I'm pretty sure thats what they're definition is. I said I was applying to mostly all Tier 2 and named off mostly 50-70 ranked schools...
