Reviews, Visits, and Rankings / Re: Is UW-Madison a "public ivy"
« on: December 08, 2007, 01:29:27 PM »
The original 8 have a considerable bump in prestige and are popularly-recognized as being the "best" 8 public schools, without regard to whether or not they are similarly-situated to the other 22 statistically.

Once you get to 30 public "Ivies", you're really saying "these are 30 great public schools" instead of "these are 8 elite public schools."

Berkely > UW-Madison.  Is it worth transferring?  I wouldn't base it solely on prestige, but it's probably as good a reason as any to add to the mix.

According to Wikipedia, under the broader definition but not under the original meaning.

Mind editing above post?  I'd be glad to PM with anyone who cares.

I think they would probably be pretty trusting of you.  I mean is there really anyone out there who would say something like that to every school they applied to?

Yes.

I accidentally applied ED to Vandy my first cycle.  I didn't provide the contract, but I did check the wrong box.  I didn't realize until I got an acceptance; I explained the error, and they were gracious and commuted my acceptance to a wait list.

Just write "decline to answer". :)

I overheard an admissions officer talking at lunch today at the place I like to eat.  I hope that makes me an expert.

The above advice worked for me.

As for the LSAT -- it just wasn't worth the effort for two damn points.

There's a lot of bad information on this board, but a lot of pre-law advisers know even less.  Some of the people here have applied to law school recently and are currently in law school, so the anecdotal success stories based on personal experiences can be more helpful than the prelaw adviser's comments based on nothing.

If you are an otherwise reasonably attractive candidate, it will be helpful but it certainly isn't an ace card.  If you are a very strong candidate, it could hurt your chances for scholarships.  The formulation from "MajorMajorMajor" is a good one to use.
