Acceptances / Re: Still No Decision from UF!!
« on: March 26, 2008, 05:40:42 PM »
First, I want to say thank you to everyone on this board for getting me through this most difficult process. I got into FSU about three weeks ago and was going to withdraw my app from UF today (Monday), to send FSU my deposit. After seeing the posts about the 40% thing and that letters for those who applied by the priority deadline would be going out this week though, I decided to wait a little bit longer. However, today I finally got in, and it is honest to god a dream come true for me. My uncle and aunt who I grew up with, and who are both alumnusís and current state judges, have inspired me a lot throughout my life, and I have always, always, sought to follow in their footsteps and attend UF.

I went through a lot to get to this point, and believe the other posters who said that UF looks for diversity in their classes. I got a 148 on my first LSAT attempt, and last year, after applying to 14 schools (mostly 3rd tier, but a couple 1st and 2nd including UF), I did not get into a single one. I almost gave up on my dreams. I thought that no matter my scores, I would not get in anywhere because of my history. I dropped out of high school at age 15 after a bad domestic situation with my parents through childhood, some poverty, and having to move from place to place living with different relatives and the such. I was bitter, thinking that my past had caught up with me, and that my early hardships and mistakes would dictate the rest of my life.

However, I retook the LSAT and got a 157, and my UGPA is 3.57 (5.6 Index). I did most of this myself, but without following the discussions on this topic and the board over the past two years about multiple LSAT scores and UF, I probably would have given up on my dreams. So thank you, thank you so much.

Congrats!  Fellow 5.6 admit here.  Anyone else still waiting?

I'll most likely be attending.

I wish Miami were a T1 school - feels like they should be...

Yeah, their giant class size is a huge hindrance.

It's old and some of the values have changed, but it does a good job of explaining the criteria.

Two thoughts:
Alabama is the new Iowa.
Lol @ FSU, trying to game the rankings to beat UF. They cut their incoming class by 1/3 and planned to admit a monster transfer class, plus they offer huge amounts of scholarship money to anyone who would get an acceptance to UF. Pretty funny.

Agreed.  All the FSU students I know have been telling me for the past 2 years how "this is the year" they'll pass UF in the rankings.  It's going to be pretty hard, given the disparity between their reputation scores, for them to pass UF anytime soon.

For me, the rankings are a baseline indicator. For example, I'm currently trying to decide between Wake Forest and UF. If UF dipped again after having lost 6 points last year, that would have scared me off of UF, because it would have indicated an overall downward trend.

On the other hand, Wake dropping from 36 to 42 isn't shocking, because there was a huge block of 36 last year, which has been divided into 2 at 36, 4 at 38, and 2 at 42.

A dip like the one Davis took, from 34 to 44 is really huge.

I just think it goes to show that schools have no clue what's going to happen. FSU admins were bragging all over the ASD back on 02/22 about how we all needed to watch the US News rankings this year, because I believe they saw themselves not only breaking T1 (and I'm surprised they didn't, actually), but also eclipsing UF. They were quite smug about it too.

And holy s@%t @ in the time it took me to post this 10 new replies being posted.

Yeah, FSU tells all their incoming students that, as well as their current 1L's.  It's sad, and one of the reasons I'm probably choosing UF over FSU.

Where do you want to practice?  I'd much rather live in Seattle for three years than in Davis, but you should probably go to UW if you're thinking about practicing in the Pac NW area and Davis if you're more interested in N Cali.

-If you are an in-state resident for one of the schools, let me know which one Florida Schools
-If your parents are paying for a % of your law school, explain that.  Be sure to include whether or not you care about your parent's spending excess money. Parents want to help--may not be necessary
-Let me know what you are like socially and what type things you enjoy drinking/outdoorsy stuff
-Where you want to practice, and what kind of law you want to practice (possible options include biglaw, midlaw, small firm law, public interest, clerking, government and business) I'd like to clerk and then do NPO environmental...maybe governmental policy work, maybe midlaw or boutique maritime/environmental firm
-Any other notably relevant information

I'm still waiting as well.   :-\

Law School Applications / Re: University of Florida, Anyone?

LoL. Billy was Gator City called the Purple Porpoise then? Or was that before your time

Well, I know it was Gator City by the time I was of drinking age, but it might have been the PP until 2003--not sure.  We used to go to Balls and Cluck U, because pretty much anyone could drink at those two bars (Balls used to not have a bouncer at the back door so we'd just go in that way and grab a beer).

Where are you thinking about living next year?
