Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Rejected at UC Berkley
« on: March 01, 2008, 09:02:29 PM »
I received my first rejection today and it was Berkley. It was expected but the optimist in me held out hope. I have shot 3 for 4 so far with 6 more to go. If I can get 2 or 3 of those I will be happy. If it helps anyone I have a 160 and a 4.0.

Iowa was my top choice of my targets and now that I have been accepted I would like to hear from someone who knows about the law school about employment prospects. I spoke with a 1L but they did not know much about this. I have thought long and hard about retaking the LSAT and waiting a year because I took about a 10pt hit on from my PTs because I was so anxious during the testing. I figured that a 160 LSAT and a 4.0 GPA would place me at a school where I would have a good chance of doing well. And I don't mean guaranteed top 10% but I figured I could at least stay in the top 30% or so. Is this true?

The 1L I spoke with said top 30% would give one a good chance of landing a job paying $85,000 or more. Does anyone have any real evidence that this is untrue?

P.S. I have already seen the JDUnderground link about how Iowa Law is so terrible. But I would like to hear some substantiative advice about the school good or bad

Thank you.

Choosing the Right Law School / In at Iowa!!!!

Got an e-mail today and for some reason my status checker still says decision in progress. If any of you remember my previous posts about Iowa then you know how happy I am.

Law School Admissions / what to expect
« on: February 19, 2008, 04:19:31 PM »
I am not completely sure about how the status checker thing works in conjunction with receiving a accept/reject notification. The three schools I have applied to that have status checkers are Iowa, Georgia, and Ohio State.

My question is if my status checker changes how soon should I receive notification of their decision. Would I receive an e-mail that day? For example, I have seen on Law School Numbers that Iowa had sent e-mail for acceptances. If I do not receive an e-mail is this a sign of a rejection? Do some schools send e-mail at first and latter in the cycle send letters?

Thank you to anyone who can provide insight.

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Florida
« on: February 06, 2008, 07:14:18 PM »
I received my first acceptance the Monday after I returned from my honeymoon. I was accepted at Florida letter postmarked Jan 29th.  Not my first choice but I would love to live in Florida.

Visits, Admit Days, and Open Houses / median salary
« on: January 21, 2008, 08:05:30 PM »
Where do you need to be in the class rank to be likely to obtain a job at the median public salary? I know this probably changes from school to school but does anyone have a guess. Here is how I made an estimate(U of Iowa):

Job Distribution
Private Practice= 58%
Government= 10%
Clerkship= 5%
Academic= 5%
Public Interest= 9%
Business= 13%

Average Salary
Private Practice= $89,298
Government= $44,888
Clerkship= $43,134
Public Interest= $37,698
Business= $82,455

Of the students who enter the respective areas:

Clerkship > Academic > Private Practice = Business > Government > Public Interest

Try and follow me:

5+5+[(58+13)/2]= 45.5

So, if you are in the top 40% of the class you should have a good shot at a job of $80,000+, right?

Law School Admissions / How bad is this typo?
« on: January 21, 2008, 06:02:51 PM »
I was about to send my addendum to my 10th school when I read over it and found a typo. How bad does this sound. I have sent it to 9/10 of the schools I am applying to and the tenth one was a safety that I really have little or no interest in attending. It is in the first paragraph so I figure they will see it.

" I accepted a judicial diversion in which I completed 100 of community service and six months unsupervised probation."

Is it possible they will think I intended to put 100 of community service?

Law School Admissions / Clerks office sent wrong ssn
« on: January 20, 2008, 12:02:46 AM »
So, I had the clerk and master of my county send a letter to Florida telling them that my record had been expunged. They sent me a copy of this letter and I noticed that they had my social security number is wrong by one digit. Will UF Law be able to use this or do I need to have them send the letter again with the right ssn?

Choosing the Right Law School / Where else should I apply?
« on: January 11, 2008, 08:23:53 PM »
I am fielding suggestions for another school I should apply to. I have 9 apps out now and I would like to add another. I am thinking of Tennessee but I would like to add another reach/target. I have a 160 and a 4.0. Schools that are known to value GPA highly would be great.

My reasoning it that I will probably retake the LSAT in June and wait a year if I do not get into one of my top choices.

My current list:

Boston College
William & Mary
North Carolina
Ohio State

Would I have a shot at Bama? I know they love in state.

Studying for the LSAT / June LSAT plan
« on: January 10, 2008, 10:42:07 PM »
I am considering retaking the LSAT in June and taking a year off because of my terribly disappointing 9 point drop from my avg prep to the actual test. I only studied about 6 weeks for the December test and I think I can do much better. I never did the ground building study because I was so rushed. I read the LG bible and took about 10 PTs. I thought that would be enough but, now I think it may not have been. I will try to improve from a 160 to 170+.

Would the following make a good plan? Start light studying in February, learning question types and LG game types, reading scholarly material, taking a PT once a week. March: Two PTs a week and heavier studying. April & May: Full swing. PT every other day and daily studying.

How beneficial are the classes? I live in about an hour and a half drive from any city with a class so I think the only realistic option would be online class or a weekend course. Are these helpful?

Thanks all.
