Hey rhymnocerous (this is my favorite name on LSD, btw) here's my thought, fwiw:

I think the NYU/Col thing is a valid toss-up for a lot of people, but when I read the beginning of your original post about wanting to be a PD doing death penalty work, my mind instantly flashed to the NYU mag sitting on my coffee table and Anthony Amsterdam on the cover of it. This is the first thing you mentioned, you know what you want to do, so I think it's a no-brainer given NYU's general PI rep, Amsterdam et al, and the LRAP.

I get you on the prestige thing. I'm sick of the muted response when I tell people that I'm going to one of the top 5 law schools in the country instead of the one that they've heard of. On the other hand, I think there's something cool about being able to be really proud of NYU, wear their gear around, and have no one think I'm being an arrogant prick about it. I'll be curious to hear what you end up deciding to do.

Law School Applications / Re: Who has had the BEST cycle?
« on: April 15, 2008, 12:15:41 PM »
Today Rabbit was offered $75,000 from Columbia.

The only things that would have made her cycle better would have been a Hamilton and an RTK.

She's going to Stanford.

At least she should.

To update the rabbit watchers: apparently she's withdrawn from columbia. Check tmz.com for up to the minute news on rabbit's decision and whether wally will begin his pre-study for law school.

Acceptances / Re: NYU vs. Columbia Poll

I plan to take the train up to columbia to study during finals time. The long commute will be worth it to have some elbow room in the library. RCT - who won Dean's Cup last week?

During finals time, both law libraries only allow students of their own schools inside, so that plan won't work.

And the Dean's Cup is returning to CLS this year.  We're rather pleased about it.

kind of figured that...

Granted, but I feel like study space will be tight around finals time wherever you go.  Also, this is kind of a personal issue because I will probably be spending more time in the library than someone who lives closer.  Hopefully I'll manage! NYU also lets students study in classrooms around finals, so hopefully that eases the congestion.

Although I am a fan of the NYU library, I will admit that the views from the classrooms at Columbia are much nicer...  You get to look at the nearby architecture, which I'm a big fan of.

I'm just saying that there seems to be a marked difference.  I've heard complaints about not being able to find any place to sit near finals time, and that definitely doesn't happen here.  On the other hand, it's a relatively minor point, and if you're going to be spending lots of time in the library during non-finals time, the upside might outweigh the downside.

I thought this was obvious: CCN becomes CNBC.  It's even easier to remember.

Haha. Awesome. Why are berkley's lsat scores so low compared to everyone else?

Yeah but how deep into the class at HLS do they recruit nominees? Obama was on law review, I don't think you can get presidential nominations without being top 10% of your class. But I heard that Hillary was middle of the pack at Yale. Fact is, BIGPres is only impressed with HLS if you do great grade-wise.

But seriously, if Wally says you should go to NYU over Harvard, that's really saying something. I vote NYU.

Any numbers?

Reviews, Visits, and Rankings / Re: NYU ASW
« on: April 10, 2008, 04:23:46 PM »
I was at the NYU day, but not the Columbia one (waitlist city).  Having come from Columbia undergrad I was a bit skeptical about NYU in general, despite rankings and the general consensus that it is an amazing school.  I came away from the ASW knowing that I'll be happy there.  Professors were amazing, including a discussion on international law with a couple of their top profs (Kingsbury, Alston) that got me pumped to take their classes.  Panel discussion with Marty Lipton, the managing partner at Cravath, senior partner at Simpson, etc. -  very intimidating group of alumni but a really cool insider's take on current issues in corporate governance.  Overall, people seemed down to earth and normal, which is a big factor for me.  Only downside - very long day (8:30 to 6 with no breaks).

WTF?  can anyone confirm this?  I would like to get some work done between classes.

I think they meant the asw.

FYI, no one I know has ever paid full price for a Thinkpad. 20-30% employee/friend/school discounts FTW.

Credited. I got 20% off (Xmas sale) and found a coupon code online (additional 10%). The x61 has pretty great durability reviews, but the SO just got the t61 (I think) and is quite pleased with it.

After spending a day removing all the shite that came preloaded.

I haven't been able to find them at best buy or circuit city. Are they only available online? It'd be nice to compare the weights and stuff before buying.
