Where should I go next fall? / Re: Denver AUSA
« on: February 22, 2008, 07:35:20 PM »
All really good points, and you are right that three years or so down the road could really change my mind about where I wish to live and what I'd like to do.

Why Denver?  Ive always loved Denver while living in Fort Collins for a few years and my wife already has some family there (though she's from California).

Where should I go next fall? / Denver AUSA

Hello All,

After law school, my goal is to land a job in the US Attorney's office for the Denver district and I was wondering if anyone on this board has an idea/experience with landing such a position.  I will likely be attending either UPENN Law or Columbia Law this fall, but I was also accepted to CU-Boulder and the University of Denver.

While I realize that it would probably be silly to take Boulder or Denver over Penn or Columbia (barring an extenuating circumstance or full ride at one of the former), do you think that being from outside Colorado, attending law school out of state, and then applying at the US Attorney's office in Denver would find me in stiff competition with some of the gunners from the Boulder/Denver law schools?  Would I be better off in this scenario just attending Boulder, the "hometown favorite?"

Also, does anybody know how difficult it is to get these jobs?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Where should I go next fall? / UPenn/GULC PI Scholarships?

I am just wondering if anyone knows when UPENN and Georgetown Law will be making their announcements regarding Public Interest fellowships this year.

Does anyone know what kind of applicants have been awarded these fellowships in the past?  Do I have to cure cancer between now and then to even anticipate winning one?

Thanks!

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: UPenn w/Wharton Cert
« on: February 15, 2008, 12:16:09 PM »
Well I don't have the cert yet, although if I do choose Penn Law it'd be a no-brainer for me.  Although, like you said, it is mos def "highlight on the resume" material, I am curious to know how it is viewed from a business perspective, and if it gives any significant boost in credibility to one's prospects at a law firm or other position.

After all, it isn't an MBA...

Does anyone here know from experience (theirs or others') how the Wharton certificate generally looks to potential employers?  Being comprised of only four Wharton classes do you think it'd be substantive enough to draw a really positive response, or is it just a bit of extra but inconsequential icing on an already tasty cake? (whew! split-second analogy here)

thanks!

Law School Applications / Re: PENN PENN PENN!!!!
« on: February 13, 2008, 01:14:49 PM »
What can anyone tell me about the UPenn neighborhood?  I was accepted there as well and it's lookin' great, but I've always had a prejudice of Philadelphia being a somewhat "blah" city.  Can anyone provide a description of/link to a description of the surrounding neighborhood?

thanks!

Law School Applications / Waitlist Questions:
« on: February 13, 2008, 11:58:16 AM »
Hey all,

I was just waitlisted at Columbia and U of Chicago and I have a few concerns that I hope some of you could help me out with.

1) Does anyone know how "deep" a typical waitlist at either school is and how far in they may reach in an average year?

2) Since they may not make a waitlist decision until May or later, how does this affect prospects for need-based financial aid?

3) olumbia says that they will reevaluate applications in May, but many schools ask for reservations to be made by April. How does this work? Can one make a reservation at say, Penn, and then if admitted to Columbia decide otherwise? Would a deposit or something be lost?

Thanks in advance for all of your input!

I have a 3.46 gpa (3.37 from the LSAC screw-job) and an LSAT score of 173.

Soft factors:

-State senate financial research experience and I'm a current Peace Corps volunteer.

-GPA was a 3.9 for my final two years after taking a few years off to work the night-shift on a large, urban emergency-911 ambulance system (in addendum).

-Non URM.

-Both LORs and essay are school specific.

Thanks!
