Transferring / Re: U Texas to NYU or not???
« on: August 03, 2008, 01:43:29 PM »
You did extremely well.  Any tips?

I would go for NYU because you never know when you might move, but, then again, UT + Law Review may be very portable as is.

I don't mean to disrupt your conversations (not sarcasm, I swear), but is there any trick to writing these 1L cover letters?  I'm having a hard time coming up with reasons that aren't location or "I like the variety of your practice groups."

The trick to writing those cover letters is that you can't send them until December 1. ;)

I know that, but people told me I'll be too busy by then.

Cady's comment should be co-signed: cider is, indeed, very good.

All right, I'll leave everyone alone now, unless you have good anti-procrastinating for cover letters tips.

General Board / Writing Cover Letters is HARD!
« on: August 03, 2008, 11:47:18 AM »
I don't have many reasons beyond "I'm from the area" and "I like your firm's small size, but really I'm desperate!" and all of these firms start to sound the same after a while.  Researching them as a pre-law, needless to say, is tough; it's not as if I can relate to their recent cases.

I'm not complaining; I realize that I'm lucky to be going to a school where 1L firm employment is possible, but is anyone in the same boat?  Am I missing something?  Did anyone enjoy compiling a list of 50-100 firms and targeting letters?  Can I write general letters?  I can't stop procrastinating with this project.

ETA: Damn you, Facebook!  Ever since the newsfeed feature, I can't stop posting news articles and arguing with people over them.

Law Firms / Re: A question for people working in Biglaw...

Texas is where to be.  Same salary of $160 plus one of the lowest cost of living in the nation plus no state income tax.

What about property taxes?  I assume that depends on the county, but I'm curious to hear about whether it's reasonable.  What are some cheap COL places in Texas?  Austin?  Dallas?

And so you're left with what -- Federal income taxes, Medicare, and a few other things?

I have zero ties to Texas.  How can I convince recruiters that I'm interested in living there?  Is a 1L firm job a possibility?

tag.  I would also like to define "exit options" once and for all.  Do you want to work in management consulting after leaving the firm?

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Cornell chances

You're too close to the bubble.  I would definitely re-take, unless you'll be satisfied with a T20 like USC or Texas.  Unfortunately, you may be waitlisted at UCLA and Vandy.
